what I engineer when I'm not *engineering* :-)
This weekend I started making a custom window for our remodeled bedroom's clerestory. We had a vent and an attic. The attics gone and the vent is now a "window". I've had a plastic film window stapled up for months while I attend to more important aspects of the project. This weekend we started the project of making a new window for the hole. I made the sill from 2 pieces of 2x6 white wood and the window box is 1x6 pine. My plan is too make a custom stain glass panel and double pain it with a sheet of tempered glass for the exterior layer. We'll place some framing inside the window box to hold the glass. Just wanted to share with my friends... it's my first made from scratch window. best regards, mike

Nice. Are they not cheaper from stock though? I know it's nice to do your own and that but I think the price of jigged up and mass-produced, machine finished frames is so low that something like that is not worthy of your obvious skills.

The reason I went custom is that the hole in the wall existed... and we didn't want to disturb the exterior wall. Plus we really wanted to make a custom stain glass window for that spot. Good points though, Jon. It's been very rewarding to remodel our house to a standard that I can not afford to just pay someone else for... people that visit walk in and they are literally speechless at the simple yet anal retentive woodwork I've been doing. My wife has been putting 5 coats of varnish on all the trim and then we wax it with carnuba wax. Houses for working people over here are made of manufactured "things" now a days and you can lose the connection to the earth that you enjoy in your area where there is history in the buildings. Our house is *almost* 90 years old and over here most advice we got was "it's too old... you should bulldoze it"... but we wanted a house that had a story so the ship has sailed and I am doing lots of detailed work. Gary, love your bathroom!!! off to bed and work the next few days. best regards, mike

... and we didn't want to disturb the exterior wall. Fair enough, I only said that because I'm planning to build a power amp sometime this year so I'll be expecting you to tell me where I'm re-inventing the wheel...

Nice joints, Mike. Pretty piece of pine too. What's "white wood?" BTW- When do the electronics and speaker go in?

Congratulations, Mike, on being the first person in history to use the word "clerestory" in a music-oriented forum. I am impressed.

"I swanny" is an expression used a lot in the southern states..... out in the country especially.... I'd guess it means roughly, "I'd swear now.... " or I reckon it to be correct.........or the swanny could be a dance that I know nothing about and the person is bragging that they can dance it.....
