sorry about that, here's what i did:
edit>preferences>midi - control surfaces,
then i clicked the yellow star near the top right of screen (add new controller surface)
then: act midi controller drop down window>vs100
then: input port drop down window>control vs100> ok.
then: output port drop down window>control vs100>ok. then: apply>ok - on the bottom of the preferences screen.
(if you are using a different control surface then you would obviously choose that one and not the vs100.)
make sure the driver mode is set to asio if you are using the v studio 100. i think asio might be better for a lot of equipment.
that can be set from the same preferences screen in:
audio - playback and recording>driver mode drop down window>asio>apply>ok.
also on the same preferences screen, go to audio - devices and make sure that your device is shown in the input and output drivers lists.
check the boxes if they aren't checked already, click apply and ok.
that oughta do the trick.
