FOCUSRITE SAPPHIRE PRO 40

Has anybody upgraded to the 2.2 drivers? I did and Sonar had one of it's nasty moments. (Sonar not responding) The old white/grey screen, where Sonar thinks somebody has Cakewalked over it's grave. "So this is Sonar X1", I thought. Then I tried 8. 5.3 and the same deal.
I went back to version 2. 0 drivers and all the alarm bells stopped. Tranquility in the Morrison household has now been restored.
Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64. 8 gig of unganged ram,  AMD Quad core 3200x4.

I have 3.5.38786 drivers for my Pro 40, according to the Device Manager.   Mine is working OK, as far as I know, with X1a PE and Windows 7 64 bit.

Edit/Added:  I have 2.2 Mix Control and it too is working OK.

    Saffire Mix Control 2.2
-Added support for Saffire Pro 14
    -Updated driver to version 3.5.3
-Resolved some rare blue-screens which could occur in Windows 7
-Improved driver performance in Windows 7
-Resolved issue where MIDI driver would not load when using Mac OS X in specific languages.

It probably does work on most machines, but not mine. Drivers are funny creatures. If they get a bee under their bonnet, they won't work.

On the Focusrite downloads for the Saffire Pro 40 it states that with Win 7 64 bit you need to set the Firewire controller driver to "Legacy Drivers".  That may be an issue with your particular Firewire controller or motherboard.  On my Intel Motherboard with T.I. Firewire chipset, I'm using the latest Intel driver and I'm not having a problem.

Try the Legacy Firewire Driver (there's instructions on the Focusrite downloads on how to change to the Legacy Driver) and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks Fireberd, I'll give it a go, however the 2.0 drivers are working fine, so maybe I'll have to mull it over a tad.

Well Fire, I did look at the legay drivers and they are up to date. I thought I'd give the 2.2 mix control another whirl and now it seems OK touch wood.

does anyone know how to select the output for one of the 2 headphone jacks on the front panel of the Saffire PRO 40? I havent been able to get any output but I think thats because I dont know how to properly configure sonar x1 with saffire pro 40. on the focusrite support DAW setup video, the guy sets his outputs on Saffire MixControl to the DAW Tracking preset which sets the line outputs to DAW 1 or DAW 2. I tried playing a sample after testing all the outputs in the preferences menu but there is no sound, yes I am in ASIO mode.

    Matt:

    The SP40 has a bunch of routing options and when you couple that with Sonar's flexible internal routing things can get a bit confusing at first.  There are tons of things I'd add to the method below - here is a quick start;

I'm not an X1 user, 8.5.3 here, but I use the SP40 with many other DAW software programs including Sonar the the process is somewhat the same.

#1 Setup a 'master bus' is your Sonar project that your route all of your tracks to - or if you submix to stems (e.g. guitars, drums, keys, vox, bu vox) then route those stems to your master bus.  Call your master bus something like 'Master'

#2 Make sure the Output of the Master Bus is going to the first pair of analog outputs on your SP40.

#3 Goto the MixControl SP40 software interface and click on the first tab (top left of interface) on the far right is the main output of that mixes output - immediately to the left of the faders for the main out is a fader pair that should say DAW1 and DAW2 as the input sources for that fader pair - essentially that is routed from your Master bus in Sonar.

#4 Now look lower in the Mix Control interface and you'll see the small grey buttons that represent the physical outputs of the SP40.  The labels on the buttons indicate the input source and the white text to the right of the button indicates the physical output on the device.  Notice that the second row of buttons has little headphone graphics 'silk screened' on the panel.  The left two buttons are routed to the left physical headphone jack on the front panel of the SP40 and the right two buttons are routed to the right physical jack.

#5 Click on the first button in the second row and change it's input source to the name of your tabbed mixer as the name appears in the top left of the interface - obviously select the Left channel for the first button and the right channel for the second button.

Now any signal passing out of the Master bus in Sonar will route to the DAW1 and DAW2 faders on the right side of that the first mix tab and then route to the main fader in that tab and ultimately to both your analog 1 and analog 2 physical outputs AND your headphones.

I will stop at this point since there are countless variations both on the Sonar side for Cue mixes and on the MixControl side for multiple outputs and sends with zero latency monitoring.  Give this much a try

    Best

    -D

Hello DonM I don't quite understand step #3. if you mean change the 2nd row to Analog 1 and Analog 2 i dont think that worked...and as for step #2 routing the output to the first pair of analog outputs..there isnt a pair for the first pair of analog outputs, just "Mon 1"

When I get back to the studio, I will do some screen captures that should help you.  I have assisted several studios here in Pittsburgh install the SP40 into their environments - once they got their brains wrapped around the interface they loved it.  Personally I love the SP40 interface - I have a bunch of DAC's and the SP40 makes the most sense to me.

    firebird,
I hate to ask but, can you shoot me your mix control config? I am running X1 with pro 40. I cannot get this to work. I had it working for playback then IM not sure what I did.
    1. Was trying to set up for mixing. I used preset "zero latency" and i could here my project playing. Once I tried to record a track I am not sure what I did but, now I cant get anything to play back.
    2. When is tried recording a track I could see my signal in Mix Control but, in Sonar (with track armed), there was no level. I had the proper inputs as well.

    Don M,
Did you ever get those screen captures? I could sure use the help.

    Thanks A Bunch

I m trying to figure out how to have latency free tracking and hear the mix at the same time. I can only seem to do one or the other. In other words. I have 9 tracks down and I am trying to add vocals. When I use the "latency free" tracking preset, I only hear my vocal and not the mix.

Also, when I am playing a mix in Sonar and I expand the Mix Control panel, Sonar stops playing and I keep getting dropouts whereas X1 stops playing.  MY ASIO buffer is at 512. I am running XP with latest Focusrite drivers.
    Thanks Again
