I am sooooo confused! I'm a musician not a computer whiz!

Hi,

I have read post after post about different chipsets and motherboards and stuff but when I do a search to find them online for purchase they either don't exist or have different specs.

So I am changing gears. I asked the "IT GUY' at work to spec me out a system and I'd like your opinion on what he came up with to support X1. I've been running 8.5 on an Optiplex 755 with 4G RAM. I usually record alone one track at a time, traditionally track by track. 30-40 tracks max don't use Reason or Matrix view or loops (except drums) and I build my songs one instrument one track. Like the old days :). I use Dimension, Guitar Rig and M-Tron for the most part along with guitar, bass, voice(s) and FX/mastering

I will be transferring a SATA 1TB audio drive and a FireWire card from my current PC.

What do you think?

Also can/should I do 32 bit or 64?

Unless you are a gamer or videophile you do not need to spend anything like that much (money or megawatts) on a video card.

If you're installing 8Gb of RAM then you will have to go 64 bit to take advantage of it.

32bit systems will only let Sonar see about 3.2Gb, no matter how much you've got installed.

You might also want to consider a larger hard drive than 320Gb.

Agree on the x64 and the GFX and the HDD issue.
I've just ditched my 200/500GB drives (because they were full!!!) and replaced with a clutch of these:

Get the Western Digital Caviar Black series with 64mb cache. Excellent drives (and fast!)

I'm awaiting a 1TB WD Caviar right now, as my sample drive was getting perilously close to being full.

The only slight snag is that the current drive shares a partition with my system drive, so I'm going to have to tread carefully. It's not as simple as ripping out one disk and replacing with the new one.
