My new project

I love it when I actually have a project to work on, not just working an a song for the heck of it. To me, it's usually more motivating and keeps me focused as opposed to working on something for a month and then scrapping it.

Anyway, I'm going to be doing a CD with a great singer from church and we've already got 7 songs lined up with a plan on doing about 10. I'll do most of the music, but my friend who I did the bluegrass CD for is going to help with some leads and I'm going to talk another friend who plays standup bass to play on a song. But we just decided last week to do the CD and I already have the music to 2 songs already done, and he's coming over next Monday to lay down the vocals on them. I never work that quickly, so apparently I'm motivated!

So I wanted to share my excitement but I was also wondering if you all were like me and enjoy working on something within the scope of a project vs. individual songs??

    That's great Dave!
It's so cool that we can do the music that we enjoy.

I can understand your excitement as I use to enjoy commitments too.

Personally though in answering your question, no. My preference is not
to have anything I'm committed to. Maybe a collaboration now and then
and the stuff I kick around when I want.
I let music control (mostly by contracts) almost 30 years of my life with "commitments" and  that's not going to happen again. Not a bad thing...just the way it was and is.

Commitments to me, for a long time now, feel like "have to". I don't like feeling like
I have to play. And that happens when I tell somebody else that I'll do it. A project
or a single song, doesn't matter. My word and time are "on the line" either way.

That's why collaborating with you was very cool. You made me feel relaxed about it
and you would understand if it took me a rather long time to do my thing....and that's a great thing. So I can understand working with you on a project would be really enjoyable for most anybody.

Best to you for a great CD.
    Michael

Making music for me is all good, no matter the approach or the level of commitment.

My favorite part is nagging working with The CHB though.

Thanks for the kind word, Michael! Maybe what I'm actually enjoying is creating something that I think might "live on" a little longer than something I did myself. There are a handful of songs I wrote that people have added to their soundclick station or that people mention to me from time to time - but sometimes it feels like I finish a song, I get a dozen or so comments on the Songs page, then it fades into obscurity. But when I do collabs with others (including internet collabs), it seems like I accomplished more. Like with the bluegrass CD I did for a friend recently - even though I only actually played on a few of the songs, since it was kind of family recording with him and his daughter, they will probably still be listening to that CD 20 years from now and probably remembering our recording experience, which is really cool.

It's great to have a project..... nothing focuses you like a goal with a deadline.
