Fit Improvisation misconception in Sonar X1?

I'm attempting to use the Fit Improvisation feature, as instructed by the product help file, but I'm not seeing any
result or change in my project.
I start by recording a very simple 8 note midi track on my Axiom keyboard.  My desire is to have Sonar recognize the beat
markers and tempo from this note pattern and change the ruler to match.  As the documentation states, I create another
"reference" track containing one clip with only 8 midi "note" events, which I pasted from the original recorded track.  I
select the reference track and click Process->Fit Improv.  I see no visible change to the project.  I was expecting to
see the ruler redraw with the measure/beat markers re-alligned with the start of at least some of the note events in the
ref or original track.  I've already read thru other posted questions on Fit Improv, not finding a solution or correction
of my undertanding of what Fit Improv actually does.  I did make numerous attempts varying the snap options(on/off),
metronome on/off when recording, and editing the ref track events so their durations don't overlap.
Is the time ruler supposed to change after Fit Improv?  What am I missing?  Any input is appreciated.

The ruler doesn't change. It creates tempo changes throughout the project. Have a look at the tempo view, and you should see the effect there.

I don't think John's answer is correct.  I use Fit Improvisation all the time, and, yes the tempo view changes as he states, but the ruler DEFINITELY changes to reflect it.  The music sounds the same, but the note events move to the correct place in the measure/beat.

Make sure your reference track contains only one note at a time played on the beat.  In a sense, you're creating a metronome.  My reference tracks always I use a simple midi drum patch and click the snare drum along with my improv-ed track.  After hitting Fit Improv, you'll delete the reference track, as it will no longer be right.

That's not quite right, either. The time ruler will not budge. The length of MIDI and Audio clips and the location of events in them will change to fit the time ruler. Under the hood, it's the relationship between M:B:T time and absolute time that's changing, but since M:B:T time is the fixed visual reference in SONAR, the clips have to morph visually to fit the tempo changes.

Also, note that the reference track will not change its relationship to the time ruler. It's "sacrificial", which is why you don't want to use a working track as the reference.
