Cakewalk Sonar 8, midi not working.

So I have Cakewalk Sonar 8 and I just got a new interface (M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB), and since then I haven't been able to get midi to work properly. If I start a new project and assign a midi track to a soft synth and try to just write in notes in the piano roll I get no sound. However, if I open an old project and do it with a track that was already set up it works fine. This leads me to believe that there's just something wrong with my settings but I have no idea what, any theories?

    jschone,

Not much to go on, but let's see if I can help. You say you 'just got a new interface'. Does that mean that you replaced an older MIDI interface that worked fine with this setup?

Assuming the answer is yes, did you go into Options>MIDI and select the new interface and everything appeared normal?

Do you have a KB hooked up to your new MIDI interface and can you record MIDI from it OK?

As you can see, I have way more questions than answers, but perhaps some of the questions will help you find the problem. Please answer these questions and maybe provide a little more background on your setup.

    Good luck.

    Regards,

    1. Yes, my old interface was an M-audio firewire 410 but I had to replace it because I got a new laptop that doesn't have the proper firewire connection. Everything worked fine on my old computer with my old interface.

    2. Yes.

    3. I tried hooking up my keyboard today and there was no sound. However, the decibel bar (the thing that shoots up when there is an audio signal, I don't actually know what it's called) would respond when I would press the keys. Same story when I drew notes in on the piano roll.

I guess it wouldn't hurt if I gave some details on my computer and whatnot.

    Model: Toshiba Qosmio X505

    Processor: Intel M450 i1 2.4 ghz

    4 gigs of ram

I'm using the latest m-audio drivers.

So you're using an entirely different system now... new computer and new interface? Go to your audio options and make sure your new interface is the ONLY audio device enabled. You can do this in Options>Audio>drivers tab. Disable any S/PDIF and digital in/outs unless you are using them. If you have a lot of outputs enabled it's easy to use the wrong one if you aren't looking closely.

Check the outputs of your audio/instrument tracks to make sure they are routed to an active output.

If your old projects work fine, why not compare the settings with the new ones line by line?
