S3 folder operations

Hello,
 
I was looking at the S3 videos for some tips over the weekend and do not seem to be able to select all of the tracks in the folder to apply bulk changes such as output buss, volume, etc. I set the softsynth options to track and all outputs, click in the blank box to the left of the track folder. The tracks in the folder look like they are all selected, but any changes made to a track are only applied to the selected track.
 
It seems like a rather simple operation. I wonder what I am missing?
