Microphone posters

This semester I will be teaching Sound Engineering 1, which is an introduction to the technology behind the properties of sound as it applies to the recording, mixing and mastering process. One of the things I am looking for and cannot find are large posters that show a cross section or an exploding diagram that students can see in order to appreciate the differences in how various microphones types are constructed and how they convert vibration into electrical signals. Preferably I would love a large poster of a ribbon microphone, a dynamic microphone, and a condenser microphone. Does anyone know where one can obtain such posters?

many of the cool new retro copy mics are advertised with guts shots.

Take a look at Telefunken Electro Acoustik USA.

I'll bet they'd be happy to indoctrinate your students... ask them for a hi res file.

    best regards,

"How it's made" did two segments on microphone construction. One on the Neumann U87, and the other on the Royer 121 ribbon.

Might be a good reference for you also.

I'm stuck in the past, but my foot's tapping forward

If you are able to get copies of the 2 How it's made video's, they are well made, brief and will show all the basic components in and out of the assembly. Those are great episodes --- so are the ones on making flutes, clarinets, guitars. etc.

Why don't you have the students do the research and design the posters. If they have to double check their facts to make sure the poster is correct they will darn sure remember the material.  Then you can use them in the next class.  It doesn't even have to be a production microphone as long as they show all the working parts and be able to explain what they do.  Remember even the case design and little slots have a function, that would be the extra credit ! If I were a student I'd love a project like that.

If there are enough students have them work in teams, like team condensor, team ribbon, team moving coil, etc. They could break up the research and share what they learned to "build" the microphones.  If any of them are into art have them do the drawing for the poster.
