Patching In Hardware FX

Okay this is something I have been thinking about recently.

For the past five years or so since getting into recording I have used VST effects exclusively but now I am thinking of trying out some rack based units. I use a small rack based system with my guitar setup and the effects are great. The only problem I am having is I don't actually know how they work in a studio.

Obviously you would record the audio in the usual away but how do you add the FX?
I am ASSUMING that when mixing you would somehow send the audio out of the computer, through the FX unit, back into the audio interface and into the computer again as if you were re-recording the vocal line for example? Almost like re-amping a guitar cab?
Or is there a different / better way to do this?

I am using a TASCAM US-16-41 as my audio interface and the unit I was thinking of getting was some of the lower end TC Electronic ones (the guitar equivalents are awesome) or some lower priced Lexicon stuff.

Or should I stick with software?

Your right , just send the signal from the guitar track out, I would use output 3 or 4 ( or both) and return it to 11, and 12 on the back, You could leave it hooked up that way, Only need a 5" patch cable. 11 and 12 are the best input for this as they are line level. 13-14 are the same.
Then platy the song and record the new track as your wet mix in stereo and then blend with dry track while mixing. You could go nuts soo be careful :?
The Tascam us 1641 has terrible RTL so cannot be used for real time Efx but sonar adjusts when you record this way.. I have a thread below about this.

Absolutely - we've ALL done it. What sounded great, in yer face & punchy last night sounds Goddam awful this morning - too much of EVERY thing.

Thanks guys, I'll look into a cheap fx processor to experiment with!
Haha, I remember when I first discovered reverb, talk about overkill!
