Playing / Recording Multiple MIDI tracks Simultaneously
Here's a question: I often will have a few people over to jam, and i record as many simultaneous tracks as i can. I use a firewire mixer that lets me get many audio tracks in at a time, but I am wondering if i can record two or more separate VST instruments at a time? i.e. can i have one person on one keyboard controlling Dimension, and a second person on a second keyboard controlling another instance of Dimension? Thanks in advance for any help.

well, yes, but technically you're not recording DimPro itself, just the MIDI data. just set up a separate MIDI track for each MIDI input source and it should work fine.

thanks beagle. i realize i'm only 'recording' the midi data, but on my first attempt, i seemed to only be able to control the 'in focus' instrument. i wasn't getting any noise when the second controller was playing the out of focus instrument. i'm going to give it another try, and pay attention to specifying the midi sources for each instrument and see if i can get it to work. i'll let you know how i do. cheers cj

ok - you may have to use the INPUT ECHO ON. I know I've done this before and didn't think it was a big deal but maybe I'm forgetting some small detail.

Also make sure you set up MIDI Track 1 to receive on Channel 1 and MIDI Track 2 to receive on Channel 2, for example, otherwise both tracks will record both keyboards.

Another quirk: Sonar goofs up when recording the same midi channel from two different midi ports, another reason to set your keyboards to two different channels. Bill B.

You probably need a midi merger to input on two different controllers at once. I think your midi streams need to be port assigned prior to hitting Sonar.

UPdate to my problem: i went back and set it up as follows: synth A on track 1 with the midi input selected for keyboard X omni synth B on track 2 with midi input selected for keyboard Y omni when i click in the track pane for track 1, and play keyboard X, i can hear synth A, but playing keyboard Y results in no noise when i click in the track pane for track 2, and play keyboard Y, i can hear synth B. but playing keyboard X results in no noise next i armed the two tracks for recording, then clicked record. i could only hear the synth that i had last 'clicked' on. i.e. in focus. both tracks recorded the right midi data from each controlling keyboard respectively, and when i played back the data, i could hear the two synths. i'm stumped here, as i would really like to be able to have two musicians in the same room each playing their own midi controlled synth live together and hear the sounds their virtual instruments are producing in real time. i tried toggling the input echo on the two tracks, but as soon as i clicked on the other track pane, the other synth went quiet again. could someone else try this and let me know if they got it to work. i would be really grateful!!! thanks again in advance cj

did you try the INPUT ECHO or the MIDI merge device that were mentioned?

Bear in mind that input echo for MIDI track has three possible settings. You should check out the reference guide pages 214-216. Child

thanks for your reply. i tried toggling the input echo settings on each track, but this didn't seem to make a difference. as soon as i left 'focus' on the track, the controller was no longer triggering the sound.

i will look into the midi merge issue next.... it seems like all the midi trigger input information is coming in to each of the synths properly. as i said, when i played back the recording, but the synths were making the noises associated with the recorded midi data on the two tracks. to me, this implies that each track is set up more or less correctly in terms of having the controllers routed properly. it's seems like this question of 'focus' is the problem. will the 'merger' issue correct this? i'll keep trying.

ATTENTION - don't waste any more time on me... INPUT ECHO WAS THE ANSWER. i just went and tried another setup, and as long as both input echo's are selected to 'yellow' , then everything works perfectly. once again, this is a case of bad user, good program, and and good advice. thanks for your help, and sorry for not getting it right away. cj

Thanks for letting us know, I'm glad you asked and confirmed it as I only just noticed that feature / explanation in the guide the other day (I'm always cussing when I go on my limited jaunts in to midi because of the way they toggle around the three settings and I'm I'm only using one input device!). Cheers, Child

no kidding. the trick to my discovering the problem was to make sure BOTH tracks were selected to "input echo ON". i think in my previous attempts, i only tried one track at a time, and that does not work. the input echo icon in both tracks must be yellow for it to work. i think i'll give it a try with three and see if that works too. i can't see why it wouldn't. bye for now cj

Triggering live multiple midi tracks simultaniously = enabling "input echo on" within each midi track. Got it! Ya gotta love the search function..

Rbh You probably need a midi merger to input on two different controllers at once. I think your midi streams need to be port assigned prior to hitting Sonar. Or maybe not. I have 2 midi keyboards piggybacked. An Edirol PCR-300 is connected to the PC via USB. A StudioLogic VMK-149 is connected to the Edirol via a midi cable. Although Sonar only "sees" the Edirol, it receives midi signals just fine from the StudioLogic too and responds to controls and keys from both devices simultaneously. I normally keep the StudioLogic set to channel 1 (because it's awkward to change settings on this device) and set a different channel on the Edirol (which has a dial).
