Yamaha Motif or Akaimpk61 and Roland AX

I have a Yamaha Motif XS7 that I only use the sounds for.  I am about to get heavily involved into virtual instruments.  Should I keep the Motif as a controller for the studio and my board for live work or should I sell it and grab an Akai mpk61 for the studio and a Roland AX synth for live work?  (I have always wanted a keytar, hence the Roland)?  Open to advice and opinions.  Thanks.

I've wondered the same thing.  I have an XS6 and the only thing I use it for are the sounds - I could easily have bought a rack mounted XS instead.  oh - and I do use it when I'm playing "organ" sounds so I can use the sliders as the drawbars and the synth keys instead of the weighted keys of my stage piano.

sorry - i'm not much help to you - just empathizing.

I've got an original Motif, and although I use it for playing live, for a long time I would only use it as a controller keyboard in the studio and use soft synths/samplers for any sounds I wanted..

Recently I've used the Motif on a couple of recordings and I've been pretty impressed.  It might not have some of the multi articulations of a soft sampler, but it has actually sounded better than some similar Kontakt sounds.  I wouldn't use it for acoustic piano sounds, but for that 'fits in the mix' with a lot of other sounds it works for me.
I also know my way round programming it, to get/tweak the sounds I want, and sometimes with software there are just too many options.

Thanks for the input everyone.  Well I decided to make the plunge.  I sold my Motif XS7.  Not planning on buying the Roland AX synth though (hopefully later when I start gigging again).  But I am going to buy a CME UF70 midi controller for the studio, Komplete 7 for my studio sounds, a Casio WK 500 so I will have something to play without having to boot up a computer, and a new studio desk to make my studio look pretty.  I think that's a pretty good trade on my beloved Motif.

$1700.  I think I could have gotten around $2000, If I was willing to wait longer.

Not planning on the CME anymore, I read some really bad reviews.  I might try to use the Casio as my midi controller for a little while.
