32 - 64 bit
This may be a dumb question..(about Vista and Sonar) is 32 bit versus 64 bit a software issue or is being one or the other a function of the hardware our computer came with ??? I guess my main question is can I "upgrade" to 64 bit without changing hardware??

Not a computer geek for sure but I think the answer is YES. I built a new DAW and the mobo is designed to handle either 32 or 64 bit OS. I elected to go 32 bit XP, but I know I can go to W& at anytime I decide I want to do that. I think the bigger problem might end up being the software compatibility issues with 64 bits.

Have not tried that! What does it do - check your system to see if you can take the 64 or not? I like your little ant that runs around on your post page ! how do you do that?

some older stuff isn't "vista" or "windows 7" ready.. I have had that problem sadly.. the majority of the new machines ship with 64 bit as standard also if your buying pre-built

I haven't found very much that won't run in Win 7 64 bit. I have some old games and even they work OK. 32 bit apps will install in "Program Files(X86) and work OK. Win 7 is even XP apps friendlier than Vista. The only issue can be some hardware devices do not have Vista/Win 7 drivers. But even some of these will install in XP compatibility mode.

The only realy difference you'll notice is in the amount of RAM you can install which then dictates just how many smaple-intensive instruments you can run simultaneously. If you're only doing audio, or less complex projects then the difference will be minimal. You might find a few of your 3rd party plugs might not run under Win 7 64 bit, but most of them should operate ok

I guess my main question is can I "upgrade" to 64 bit without changing hardware?? What hardware are you running (motherboard, CPU)? As long as it's 64Bit hardware... you can run a 64Bit OS. If not... the answer is no (you'll need to upgrade the hardware) If you're running recent make hardware, you should be set. The main advantage of a 64Bit OS is that the DAW can address more than 4GB of RAM. You can see some speed improvement as well... but it's typically not a night vs. day difference.

To upgrade your system from 32 bit to 64bit ,then you have to change your processor because without these hardware change it was not possible that you can upgrade your hardware.
