The Longing (Orchestral)

You guys seem to like classical influenced music quite a lot and it is always received well so thought I would post this here too.
It is probably my proudest orchestral piece. It still is not finished (this video was posted in March 2010) but I'm really pleased with it, simple, but effective, or so I hope!

Influenced by Charles Ives The Unanswered Question.

I think you need to stop what ever project you are working on and finish this!

    It is absolutely beautiful!

I love you use of tonality vs atonality, constence vs disonance , space vs sound etc......

also how did you rendar this piece and then film the score to put up on you tube?????   that is wonderful....

did you use Sibelius to do the notation?

Wow man thanks alot for the response!
I would love to stop current projects and devote more time to this, but sadly current projects are university exams and portfolios lol!

I did render it and then film the score. I used a programme called Camtasia which is a screen capture software, really simple to use.

And yes, it is Sibelius 5. The sounds though are from Garritan Aria which I got free with ACID Pro 7.

    Thanks again for listening.

This is very nice!  The flute sound was amazing, was that a sample?  Very nice production and writing.

loving the start. i'd put Barber and Strauss down as influences too?! nice idea to film the score. today is the day for orchestral stuff...funny how that happens! i love the first 3'30 mins, not convinced by the ending, to me that bit sounded a lot less orchestral and more contrived. very good.

I really like the composition.  It has great drama and the orchestration is very nice.  However your synths need some upgrading.  Some of the instruments don't sound like high quality samples (esp the strings).   So seems like you have the first movement done, go and finish the rest.

Pretty composition. Your title fits the feeling. Next time you post, a video for this genre might be less appropriate. The only reason is because some of the tone gets lost in transition. Some of the timing is a bit too exact, which makes it an obvious digital composition, but a masterpiece, none the less.

Wow--I agree with the others here...very, very nice and it DOES fit the title well.  I sorta enjoyed seeing the score since I've attempted to write orchestra pieces, but have never printed it out.  Something about seeing music you've created it just cool I think.  :-) I hope you can finish this sometime.

Thanks very much for the comments guys. I'll address the questions asked / issues raised.

Flute Sound is from Garritan Aria.

Vechung - I would love to upgrade my synths to some better quality sample libraries but I am only a student at the moment and I can't afford the hundreds and hundreds (sometimes thousands) for good quality libraries. I got Garritan Aria free when I bought Sony ACID Pro 7. I would obviously like something like the EWQL but at the moment it is just too expensive.

Obviously one day the ultimate goal would be to have this performed or whatever, it won't ever happen but problems like the too exact timing and stuff that was brought up is pretty hard to fix in Sibelius.

Thanks everyone for checking it out though, I agree the end is particularly a little weak and its something which has been changed in present versions.

Nice stuff, Adam. The samples being what they are, it displays a nice understanding of articulations.

It needs some mastering to smooth out some rough edges. But quite well orchestrated and composed.

Very nice.   I actually just got the EWQL, I hope to someday be able to actually use it right, you so did here.

    Hi,

Very nice - I used the previous version of GPO and know what a good job you've done here getting it to sound as realistic as you have.

I like the contrasts, the arrangement, just about everything. You've got a talent.

    Cheers,
    Terry.
