Mellotron VST

I've seen - but not heard - the Tapeworm Mellotron VSTI.  It's free...so that would be cool if it works.

Anyone have a better idea for a good Mellotron?

I have GForce's Virtual String Machine and I like it.  It doesn't have Mellotron, per se, but the same company makes Mtron which is their version of a virtual Mellotron.  If the quality is on par with VSM, I'd say that Mtron would be worth looking at--it's not free, though.

I also have some good Mellotron samples in E-mu Emulator software.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

If a "good" Mellotron means an accurate reproduction of all the hiss, warble and thin tone of the original, IK's SampleTron does it for cheap. It also includes the even wimpier-sounding (but widely loved) Chamberlin, plus the Orchestron, and the even nastier-sounding Novatron and Optigan and something called the Stylophone.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I've used Tapeworm on occasion. Being free, it's a no brainer to have. It works fine. It includes a few basic Mellotron patches...nothing exotic, but the gritty, warbly Mellotron vibe is there.

There are a number of free Melotrons available. TO me Tape worms wasn't as good as a few others I've tried.  Here's a free one that I like a lot: it has 2 seperate channels available for mixing choirs strings  etc. Some basic effects  etc.   [link=http://rekkerd.org/artifake_labs-releases-redtron_mkv/]http://rekkerd.org/artifa...-releases-redtron_mkv/[/link]

cool, i'll nab the redtron too.....

i have a really cool riff on the keys, that i've wanted to develop for a long time...
    that needs this sound.
i don't play keys enough to warrant buying a high end emulation....
    so the price is right!

Yea, I think I grabbed the redtron.  I'm trying to stay away from free synths since I seldom use them.  But Redtron has a great "Court of the Crimson King" preset.

Redtron is cool. It's about as limited as the real thing was and I like the sounds that come with it.

M-Tron is a bit too lovely for my tastes it doesn't sound scratchy and 'orrible enough.

    Thanks for the inupt.

I extremely rarely use anything but live instruments...but in this case I must have a very mellotron-ish synth sound for this new tune we're working up....and I obviously won't be able to get my hands on the real deal.

Something close - including the huffy-puffy-dirty-warble - would be awesome.

I like HollowSun's Newtron Bomb.  http://www.hollowsun.com/HS2/products/newtron/index.htm Its quite raw compaired to M-Tron Pro. but you need the full version of Kontakt.  (they also have a good range of classic string synths)

flipper of bits.. you know not of the legendary status of the stylophone ? I'm shocked.. either that or it didn't sell well in the US

Rolf Harris used to advertise it in the UK.

    not tried this one but

    http://www.superwavesynths.co.uk/downloads.htm

there is one listed on there for free. can't endorse the company as sadly they left me without 3 synths I'd paid for for 4 years (but that ones free)

Hollow Sun's got one for Kontakt for $5. I bought it for a laugh . Steve Howell is toung and cheek in his marketing too.

It sounded truly awful! A horrible, buzzy pulse wave through a small cheap speaker that sounded like a very butch wasp on steroids!
There were two settings: a 'straight' sound and a vibrato sound selectable from a slider switch to the left of the 'keyboard'.

I wanted one when I was a kid, but my parents had far more sense.

Is it the one "instrument" thats worse that a Vuvazella?

I intended to contribute here for over a month now.  If you have Dimension Pro / LE, or Rapture (full version) / LE, and an intermediate skill level, you can fabricate a decent Mellotron emulation fairly quickly and easily.

The first approach focuses on taking an existing preset, and tweaking it to reflect the quirks and characteristics of a Mellotron.  With a few twists 'n' turns of the knobs, you can have a good base patch, and one that can be customized in any number of ways.  Add more "tape racks", add or subtract wow & flutter, tape noise, etc.

Mellotronic - Tutorial at the Sonar Wiki
    The original MellowTronic forum discussion

The second method uses actual (free) samples of a Mellotron.  Authentic sounds - warts and all - plus a larger selection of "tape racks" available to select from.  This is a collection of samples and their matching .sfz files, and not presets, per se.  Use the Load Multisample dialog on your synth to locate the desired .sfz mapping, and click Save to create a true .prog preset.

    Leisureland USA Mellotron Samples(free download)
The original forum discussion (with tutorial and .sfz file downloads)

Either approach has elements that will apply to the other.  A combined approach will yield the most realistic results.

The mellotron sounds of Mtron Pro bring it all for me.  King Crimson, Genesis, Captain Beefheart.  That sound was enough by itself to get me to sit through a listen of some rather blah wanne be prog rock.  Leprechauns taking a UFO to Stonehenge sort of stuff.   I especially get a kick out of the goofy Optigon backing tracks.  They sound like some sort of trippy muzak.
