"Open the Eyes of My Heart"

I'm recording a CD for a friend from my church band, Heath, who IMO is an excellent singer. I'm going to be doing most of the music but we're getting a few others involved as well. We've recorded two songs so far, with this being one of them:

Open the Eyes of My Heart

There are so many versions of the song out there and we decided on a version that had a slower, more prayerful, meditative-type feel. It's a very simple song. We might add some soprano voices and there are a couple of things I'm thinking about doing differently on the music, but I thought before doing that I would solicit some advice from you fine folks to get your opinions. Any input is appreciated!!

hey Dave, great version of this. singing is excellent. musically is fine, there may be a little tuning anomaly between the acoustic and the chiming synth though which is a little annoying. nice change up in the chorus.

Very pleasant, accurate voice for sure.  My ear wanted some 3 or 4 part harmony on the chorus.  I think that would have provided the power and contrast.  But other than that, it sounded pretty good to me.

Yeaup I'm familiar. Sounds really good. What's the signal chain on that singer?

I may go 3 part on some of the holy's that are currently 2 part.

Thanks Mark! I check out the synth / acoustic issue you mentioned...

Daryl I agree some more harmonies would be nice - I've suggested to him adding some female vocals.

Robby - I appreciate the input! Vocal chain was a Blue Blueberry mic into my PreSonus Eureka preamp. Then "in the box" it was Sonitus EQ just to add some HPF then a little Sonitus Compression (although I mainly smoothed things out w/ a volume envelope) and then PerfectSpace reverb ("medium plate", with high pass). Harmonies were the same except a different reverb setting (santuary??).

00:56 - 01:05 needs pitch correction! Otherwise everything sounds nice... nice voice tone too!

Maybe a couple of easy-listening acoustic or electric guitar licks after each line vocal in the choruses? More voices too.... I agree.

I like how the song winds down too... very peaceful. Nice job!

Great song..... it's been done by so many....

I heard the tuning issues with the guitar and the "keys" (?)  make sure they are in tune.

In the chorus the bass sounded like it playing wrong notes.

A problem with doing a song slower but still keeping the heavy drums.... is that it often sounds like its "plodding along" and I got that vibe in a few places....

On the plus side, the singer has a nice voice. It would have been better to have a harmony based chorus.... I like the harmonies in the last choruses.

Kiki – thanks for your ears; I’ll double-check the vocal pitch. I was also thinking about some simple guitar licks after the vocals lines in the chorus, to fill those spaces. I’ll wait for sure until after more harmonies are added (if they are) to decide what works best. I was happy with the “winding down” part, too – glad you liked it!

Herb – I think the issue with the synth bells (that are part of a Dimension Pro pad) is that they keep ringing out as the guitar changes to the next chord. I’ll have to mess with that. The bass is playing the right notes on the chorus (there are only 4 of them ) so I’m not sure what you’re hearing there. Glad you like his voice, cuz I’ll have about 9 more song that I’ll need input on before it’s all over!!

yeah, I don't agree at all. The harmonic of his voice may not sound full for those notes, but I don't hear them being inordinately flat or sharp.

Never heard the song before, so nothing to judge it against. His voice sounds really good. I think it use a pad sound or something to lift the chorus and give it a bit more contrast.

Never heard it this way.  I got so sick of this song a few years ago I couldn't stand it.  Last year I started doing it now and then.  I'm always so short of upbeat songs, though, I'm not sure I'd do it this way.  BUT, who cares what I'd do?  lol  I think you did a great job with this and yes, he's a great singer.  This is a great version of this and maybe we'll just try it sometime.  :-)  Can't wait to hear the rest of your songs.

Does the Blueberry mic being Blue really make a big difference?

Thanks for the listen, Paulo! I agree on more contrast on the choruses - I'll try to get those extra harmonies added and see if that does the trick or if it needs something more.

Janet - yeah we are trying to pick songs that we don't normally do in church, and I think the reason we don't do it in church anymore is the band director got sick of it (before Heath & I joined the band). I do like the song, but we also picked it partially because it would be easy! And the mic does definitely help, but only when singing the blues.

Thanks Radio - I think my avatar should be on literature for dental schools or something...

great job Dave...enjoyed this version! in the section(s) where there's some tuning issues goin on (kiki's remarks) I'll just say the the vox-bvox harmonic notes used present some tension to that section and my ears need resolving notes not tension...

but thats a big ole nit of a pic in me brain cuz this is a very well done tune...

    very good job laddy!!!

This is great! Yes, more harmonies would be nice, but I really like the counter voice that comes in at 3:12.

Definitely one of my fav songs, and still in rotation at my church.   I like the slow version, but still feel like there's a bit of punch missing when the chorus kicks in.  Maybe I'm just used to it live though.

All in all though, very nice job.

I love this tune......I am used to it at a faster tempo.....but there is nothing wrong with your interpertation......

I think becuase it is at a slower tempo you really should put some more harmony voices in there....

    but you still done good!

I've never heard the song before Dave, but, I think you did a really nice job on this.

I especially liked the outro section.

    Warm, spacious mix, IMO.

Was that you on bass? Sounded good.

Thanks for all of the responses! We are adding 2 soprano harmonies to the choruses (and possibly the bridge) so I think that will help.

Yes, Larry, that's me on all the instruments.

We've got vocals recorded on 6 songs now - the project is going really well but I've got a lot of mixin' to do!!
