It looks like its going to be a good week.

The first series of events associated with Dubai International Jazz Festival have started. This means I have nine nights of free live music a short walk from my apartment.
It got off to a good start with local band "Blue Light Syndicate" playing Jazzy Soul, Front woman, Singer/ songwriter / Sax player Jools is quite talented as are the rest of the band. The headline was German blues band "B.B. and The Blues Shacks" http://www.bluesshacks.de/english/ These guys were excellent, great music and great entertainers too. Looks like they mostly work in Germany but they are worth checking out if they are in your neighborhood.
I have got to confirm my schedule but I am hoping to attend one of the headline events in Feb. Jools Holland's R&B orchestra with Alison Moyet and Mica Paris. Gotta pay for that one of course but it should be a good night.

    And tonight its raining.

If it stops I may wander down later, but I can't see how any one can play amplified instruments on that stage if its wet. Way too exposed. Hopefully the stage at the main events will be better protected.

Trouble with Dubai is only rains a few times a year, but when it dose it's a real mess, A bit like snow in the UK.

    'Still there is always tomorrow.

This has been good so far, apart form Fridays event being rained off. The Backdrop on the stage "Jazz World - Blues Edition" is a strong clue on what to expect.

Last night we had Louisiana Blues Man Larry Garner. What great fun that was. I love the song he did about his confrontation with a young hip-hop fan after the cars were along side each other at the traffic lights. "Your bass is coming right into may car and disrespecting Mr Lightning Hopkins" - Classic.

The other outstanding preference was British blues harp player Paul Lamb and Vocalist/ Guitarist Chad Strentz, back by the afore mentioned BB and the Bluesshacks who were acting as house band for European half of the event.

There is the usual cosmopolitan Dubai crowd too. Expats from all over, The Filipinos in particular were out in force, There were Arabs in traditional dress, Russian new money, a few Arabic "biker chicks" in leather (I kid you not) with their Harley riding husbands. Grannys and kids, Japanese, Chinese and Koreans and even a couple of genuine Honkey-tonk women. Only the Indians were strangely underrepresented. Perhaps there is a Bollywood event on somewhere.

My Dad, towards the end, took to blasting youngsters with his Les Paul and Chet Atkins CDs.

He would call me and tell me about incidents at a stop light and explain "I think they thoroughly enjoyed it"

I know I did... when he told me those stories.

    :-)

Well that's the "Jazz World. Blues Edition" over with for this year. Its been a hoot. It finished up last night with Sharrie Williams and Sax Gordon playing up a storm. What's really excellent about this type of event is it exposes you to artist and musical styles you may never have otherwise considered. I hope I am here for next years event. Now I need to go and find a few Larry Garner and Raphael Wressing CDs.
