functionless devises to keep customers happy

There used to be a company that made these rack mountable devices that had lights and knobs but did nothing. Their use was to appease customers who kept insisting on incrementel adjustments that made little to no difference in the outcome of a project. Does anyone remember the name of the company or any of their devices?

Have you ever heard the anecdotal story of Michelangelo and the nose of his David statue?

I think you can use just about any brand deice that you want.

A cheap Behringer box or a Big Neve console... just make sure the output of the channel you are using doesn't go anywhere.

    :-)

    best regards,
    mike

the devices I saw I liked because they had amusing labels for the knobs like "volumizer"

JohnnyV .... I love the pic.  Funny.

I don't think I understand what the point of a "dumby" piece of gear like the Palindrometer would be for?   Is it just a joke or were these things actually produced?

@CHUCK ,yes its for real to placate producers and band members who sit looking over the mix engineers chair and make comments, the engineer dials in or flips a switch on the non working unit and the aforementioned person "hears" the difference in the mix...

HERE  is a discussion over on GS

They were even sold through Sweetwater and are still carried by Mercenary Audio. They even have a 1-year warranty!

They have a software product, too. The Mastererizer, which is an actual Avid product.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I have a couple of their pieces. They're nice rack fillers, when you don't have enough gear to fill your rack. It also looks impressive, and let's be honest. Clients want your studio to look impressive.

Very early 80's I was touring with a band out of Vancouver, BC.  When we first hit the road, we were using all channels of 2 16 channel SoundCraft mixers - and our lead tech built a "mixer mixer" that summed their outputs, sat in the main FOH rack.  I think mostly due to his odd sense of humor, the master out volume control was this huge - maybe 6" diameter - knob that sat dead center in the panel.

Fast forward 6 months or so - we had changed our setup a bit, and were doing more submixing on stage, so we were down to 16 channnels FOH.  But Gordy never pulled the mixermixer out of the rack.

Came in handy - playing at a club or resort, if someone came up and said we should turn it down, he'd turn to that giant knob sitting dead center in the rack and laboriously cranked it counterclockwise a notch.  Swear to god, it never failed - the client would listen intently, nod and say "that's better, thanks"....

That's why I like my digital board, The band will walk out to the FOH position thinking they are about to constructively make a change to something, they look at the LACK of big knobs and return to where they belong on stage.
