Exactly. You need a sound card or external interface with a S/PDIF input. I see that card also has word clock in so it would be nice to get an interface with word clock out. That way your software can still control the sample rate automatically.  However, if you always work at the same sample rate (say, 44.1) you don't really need word clock.

It depends on what your definition of better is. If you have a cheap soundcard with poor AD then yes, it will sound better. If you have a high end set of converters then no it won't. If you are looking for and easy way to get sound into your computer and using the SPDIF jack on your motherboard, it will work fine.

Focusrite has good convertors - whether they've put their best into the voicemaster is another question.  But most modern convertors are pretty good, so I wouldn't sweat the difference.

As above, it would depend upon what you are using now.

It really shouldn't be different,  the analog outs should be the "sound" of the preamp. The idea of the A/D card is to give you the option of using a digital input. Here are some reasons you might want to do that.

    1. Your sound cards analog inputs are all used for something else and using the SPDIF will let you record two more tracks at once.
    2. Your sound cards A/D converters (or analog inputs) don't sound very good such that the A/D card would have better ones.
    3. You have no balanced inputs on your card and you are picking up noise. SPDIF would not have any noise.
    4. Your sound card has all (poor quality) mic level inputs and no real line level inputs, but has SPDIF
    5. You are connecting to a digital mixer.
    6. You want to be able to hook it up with only one cable and get two tracks.
    7. Your sound cards sample rate clock is poor quality and the one in the A/D card is better.
    8. You want to use the analog outs of the preamp for a send to a monitor mixer or video camera.

OK, I'm running out of ideas here.. but you get the idea.
