mp3 conversion not working. :(
I know drivel gets moved down here from upstairs. I'm curious to know if a real musical question will get moved elsewhere. And if so, if I'll be able to find it. Anyway, I've been reworking an old song and decided to upload it tonight. It sounds fine on my DAW, but when I upload it to SC or import it into Audacity I get this bad humming. I'm exporting at 16 bit, 44100, using the LAME mp3 encoder in Sonar, just like I've done for the last 40 songs or so. What could be wrong? Here it is: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=789731&songID=6851391

the bass player trying to figure out what an Am note is? I'm not sure I'm hearing a humming like you're hearing. the only humming I hear is from the bass resonating. what kind of frequency is this humming you're hearing?

Yeah, resonating...something. It's definitely not there in my mix. Did you listen with headphones or something? It's pretty obvious. :(

yes, with headphones and if you're talking about the bass resonating then I heard that the other day when I listened to this for you as well. remember I mentioned it then? I said, "hmm. there's something about the bass that's not quite right. it's buzzing - like the samples were too hot or something - like the recording of the bass samples were pushing the signal chain too hot."

OK, but why does it sound fine on in Sonar? And why is this happening now all of a sudden? And what can I do about it?

Janet my headphones reproduce lows very good and what I think is that the bass level is to high. I don't think it's a conversion issue. To confirm you can lower the volume or exclude it. I don't know what you are using for bass but it is generating mostly lower freq's. You may want to filter it.

what are you using for the bass? I'm not 100% positive if it's from the bass or the piano because you're running mostly the same notes for left hand piano as for the bass, so have you changed your piano parameters in Ivory for this song? why is it audible in the mp3 and not in sonar? mp3 compression always changes the sound some. sometimes it's more prominent than others. this particular song just happens to be more noticable for this particular frequency. try this: export to WMA lossless and compare the two. send me the wma as well - maybe only export 1/4 or 1/2 of the song to keep the file size lower.

Thanks, Reece. I may do that. I'm working on it now. I should have said before, it also sounds just fine in WMP. Just not in SC or Audacity. WMA lossless?

from sonar FILE>EXPORT and WMA is one of the options you can choose. I'm with Michael on this - and I was basically saying the same thing - the bass is too hot. probably because of the way dimpro is handling that particular sample.

It's the sound click advertising trolls, they like to hum a lot! I'm just kidding. Check out band camp, you can upload .wav files there, up to 291MB's I think, but I never get close to that so I can't say for sure. No Adds. There are stats but no rating system, which is fine by me because those aren't accurate anyway most of the time IMO. Bandcamp Link BTW: It's free. I've always liked this song Janet, but I could say the same for almost everything I've heard you play, you can do no wrong! Just please, "Stop Humming along with your music while recording". I'm just kidding, I hope you get the problem solved. Bobby

Janet I have to back up on the my statement "not a conversion issue" as I use Sony Vegas for that, not Sonar. If it is the converter in Sonar and it works like Sony it may have default effects applied such as compressor. I have to change that in Sony when I convert to MP3's. Whatever it is you're hearing it doesn't buzz my equipment. All the lows are clean but very heavy.

Way too hot, as in loud? I've eq'd the lower end practically to nill and turned the volume down and it's still doing it. And it wasn't doing it on the first sample I sent you, Reece. Then I was curious to hear how the bass sounded cause Jimmy was trying to get me to find a better sound. I found it but it sounds horrible now. lol Thanks Bobby.

well, it (the bass) sounds pretty much the same as the one you sent me the other day. it's the same hot resonating I was hearing then. instead of looking at EQ, just look at your levels on your DimPro, the input, the output, the levels on the track, do you have a compressor on the bass? check that. also, some sampled sounds cause problems when you go over a certain velocity depending on the sampler, the samples, etc.

I would try exporting it as a wav with no dithering. Then convert it with an external program and see if you get the same results. I would make it a high quality 320 mp3. Reason being, when you upload songs to Soundclick, they convert them to 128. 320 is as close to wav quality as you can get for an mp3.

Since I got this widescreen monitor, I've had to run IE 8 at 150% in order to read the words on the screen. But doing that means I can't see all the editing options or the smiley menu. But if you put brackets around the emoticons, they display as smileys. Sorry. Carry on.

Firefox looks better imo on newer widescreen monitors. You hold ctrl and the plus or minus key to zoom in and out. Much better than the fixed sizes in IE. I can't even get the forums to load when I use IE, that's why I switched.

Janet Thanks Bobby. You are welcomed Janet! I still say check out band camp. IMO, they are just better than the rest. I have nothing to do with Band Camp, I have noticed a significant improvement in stream quality and sound using their free service. Not to mention you upload .wav files and have unlimited space. I would never direct a kind person like you toward anything bad. Check them out and give it a try. Bobby

Greg, yeah, I thought of that. I may just change it to a cello. I KNOW I can get that to work. (in under an hour, hopefully changing the midi, etc.) But darn it, I hope it doesn't ruin my options of using bass in my pieces. :( Bub, I think I tried that, too. When I have so little time to record, it frustrates the heck out of me when things like this waste my time. OK rant over. I'll get back to work on it when I can.

Listen this morning on my mail PC on pair of Tanoy concentric speakers could hear something but was not sure. Just listened again in the studio and there is some definite resonance that sound a little like a bow drawn slowly over a string. I would suggest that there may be some inter-modulation occurring that may be being amplified by the encoding process. You mentioned that you have EQ'd the bass out what exactly do you mean. It sounds like the bass could do with a low pass filter to tame some of the top end and possibly a narrow notch cut where it tends to obscure the pianos bass part Not that I would know but.... Nice tune nicely played.

there's a phase reverse switch on the track properties in sonar. it's a circle with a forward slash through it.

Hi Janet, in console-view click on the circle with a slash through it, that changes the phase of that track. You don't hear a difference to the bass track while you listen to it on its own, but it may help if there are frequencies that are exactly in phase on the bass and the piano track and therefore amplifying each other, putting one track out of phase with the other one reduces that. Greetings, Rik

Try a better patch or a sample other than DimPro, if you have one available. I actually like the Sound Center Synth bass called Ricko, it has a sort of Rickenbacher sound. I have had to turn a number of the bass tracks down for the same reasons.... and quite often if one bass track is resonate or muddy sounding or weak, I try another sample and waa laa, it sounds great. To me the bass didn't sound too bad. Just a hint of mud to my ears. I would scoop the piano a bit......I have been rolling off the bottom end of piano AND bass for some time now and it seems to make the bass actually sound fuller if it's done right...

I don't Herb. And I've used this same one on a couple other songs and everyone said it sounded great. I'm beginning to think everyone may be stretching the truth a little bit here and there with my stuff though. lol Thanks again, Reece and Rik. I've never noticed, or obviously used, that before. I just tried it, and turned the bass track down some and it works fine. Well, actually, I hear a little buzz on SC that I don't hear when I play it in WMP on my DAW. I may just have to live with that. :( Thanks everyone. Without you guys I never would have finished my first song 3 years ago, believe me!!
