Purchasing V-Studio system
Hi all,
I am ready to pull the trigger within a few weeks on a new V-Studio 700C/R system.
(still watching / waiting for the promised update too)
Just curious where everyone ended up purchasing their systems from.
I am leaning towards Sweetwater, but thought I would ask.

I bought mine's from Sweetwater...I even got them to price match a 15% off coupon that I had from another retailer, plus they still did the 3-payment thing.

Got both my units from different eBay outlets actually. With a bit of patience I got both at good prices from the US to Australia and with X1, the 700C is starting to look very promising all over again... there is a lot (IMO) coming from the X1/700C combination.

I'm using only the VS700R -with 8.5.3. ...slightly kludgey on the functional side.... but I've found workarounds and really digging what I hear.

By the way, I see you have Mytec. have you compared with the VS 700 R converters ? Is the difference slight or Mytec is far superior ?

I'm using the Mytek as the A/D from the Pacifica/Hammer chain. That goes into the VS700 via AES. I don't think I'd say the Mytek is 'far superior'. I would say the Mytek is 'better' but I'm pleased with the A/D converters of the VS700. I'm more pleased with the VS converters than with the RME MultiFace II that I was using. So, with the link you gave, I was carried away by your musical world, and I even wonder if, by listening to your nice voice perfectly mastered (in addition to superb arrangements), I should rather work my own voice instead of trying to master the technology or find a probable improvement by a particular brand of converter !

She's a client of mine Peter. Thank you for listening and the kind words.
If price isn't an issue, I don't think you could possibly go wrong with the VS. I wittled it down to a Fireface UFX and the VS700. I haven't heard the UFX. While RME is known for higher end stuff, they're products are still, arguably, the "entry level to high end gear". That's where I'd place the VS 700. It's not a knock and it certainly doesn't mean you can't produce an awesome sounding record. At the end of the day, as you say, it's not the easiest thing to turn water into wine- or said another way- output is usually as good as input.

Hi Ted, You certainly can use the VS-700R with SONAR X1 without the VS-700C, but you will love some basic functionality by just having the interface that you would have if you had the complete set. With just the interface there is no headphone output, monitor control, or physical mic pre control (you can still use your mouse) as these things are done from the control surface. With that in mind I would suggest using a monitor control system like the Mackie Big Knob or similar device to go along with teh VS-700R. Or, if you want a similar device that doesn't lose any of the functionality check out Roland's new OctaCapture.

I'd say go ahead and pull the trigger gcarlson. I have the VS700 system and although I'm no expert studio engineer, even when composing-recording your own music the Console saves you a lot steps. Having footswitchs and one button access to play and record is a great time and attention saver. Being able to control Sonar and the Console from a Midi keyboard controller without leaving the playing position is just invaluable. Once you have Sonar set up right you can do multiple takes of your peice while you're in the groove with just the push of a footswitch or button. When it comes time to edit, effect tweak, mix and master, the console can't be beat for it's level of integration. Having a tactile mixing surface that is more than a mouse and keyboard is invaluable in learning the craft. If I sound like a fanboy, I am.

Yep.. the 700C makes tracking a LOAD easier for sure... and when it's mix time... deffo saves you some serious time.
It's great having a monitor volume control too on it.. I got to disconnect the previous passive control I was using here.

Sweetwater are great... check out West LA Music too as they've always been killer for price (for me anyways in Oz). Also worth noting too I think that the 700R really has some serious output options as is... if you wanted to set up a room with complete options, it will go a very long way to providing solutions. I've still got RME and MOTU gear and it gets left dusty as the 700R is so far doing everything required... except for Fantom under 64 bit, but that's just my preference for having no interest in private head butting.
