weird arpeggiator problems

I'm trying to drive some synths via the arpeggiators, and having really strange problems where no sound is output while recording or playing, but as soon as I stop the transport the arp plays for a while, sometimes quite a while. Sonar Producer 8.5.3. I was previously having this problem intermittantly on my Frontier Sierra and not on the other two interfaces: AMT8 and Opcode Studio 64x. So I pulled out the opcode and the Sierra, and now I have the problem on the AMT8.

Any Ideas? Windows XP 2GB ram Pentium D805 machine.

    Turns out this seems to be a side effect of "prepare using" midi buffers set high - 1000ms   Set it to 64 now I can actually use the arp, still gives me nasty pile of stuck notes when I stop the transport, but at least it works. High settings were necessary back on Sonar v.1...
