Home Studio 2002 on my Windows XP machine

Hi all,

This is my first time posting on this forum. I've had HS2002 since it first came out, and I'm finally trying to get into using it!!!

Installed fine on my XP Pro machine, I think...

I cant find any DXi synths, it's supposed to have Virtual Sound Canvas DX1, DreamStation DX1... but I can find none of these anywhere in the installed HS2002 on my PC.

I found the Virtual Piano on the install CD and tried to install that, it said OS not supported... :(

I can't hear any MIDI playback... even through the sample files and tutorials. I can hear the audio samples, though...

I am at a loss... I know ZERO about MIDI and how it is supposed to work in a DAW like this. in fact, I know nothing about MIDI at all...!!!!!

I don't want to use this just to record all audio, relying on my Boss DR-550 mkII for the drums and percussion. I would like to learn how to do that stuff "in the box".

I've heard that Cakewalk is supposed to be the easiest way to record music on a PC, but I can't seem to get my head around this MIDI thing...

Here are some of my PC specs if it might help...

P4 2.4gb
Intel D865GBF mobo
Integrated SoundMAX 4.0 audio
2gb RAM

Under the Options-MIDI Devices, I see
 1. SoundMAX WDM MIDI  <-----  (on top and highlighted)
 2. Microsoft MIDI mapper

I downloaded DreamStation DXi2 and installed it, but HS2002 shows no indication of seeing it. Is there a specific place and/or way to install this?

Hrumph...!!

I tried this many years ago (HS2002 on this machine) with the same frustrations as I have now and just finally went back to my cassette based four track machine, I don't want to do that again!!!!

Any help is most welcome and much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Ron

HS2002 is 9 years old. I doubt many people are left in this forum still using it. I'd suggest you update to a newer version, but your equipment is old also.

Have you taken the tutorials in the help menu?

Thanks for the quick reply, I really want to make sureI understand some of this before I plunk down more money for the same (albiet newer...) software again...

To answer your question on my going through the MIDI tutorial...  Yes, somewhat...

The tutorial wants me to use the Virtual Piano... the one that told me my OS was not supported and would not let me install... :(

So, I guess I need a Virtual Piano something-or-other that works in XP pro and I can get HS2002 to "see"...

Is the Virtual Piano and the DreamStation DXi different components? In other words, do I need a "Virtual Piano" for my DreamStation DXi to play "through"...?

    Thanks again,

Click 'Insert' at the top of the screen. Do you have any soft synths in that list?

I'm pretty sure that HS2002 did not have VST support, but if it did it would have been from the VST wrapper - which was a separate program.

for DX instruments once they're installed and you RESTART HS2002 then they should show up in the menu, but not the VST instruments.

for VST instruments, IF it has VST support at all, you close HS2002, open the VST Wrapper (should be an executable from the same START>PROGRAM folder as Cakewalk Home Studio), tell it where the VST folders are located and run the scanner.

then open HS2002 again after closing the VST Wrapper and the VST instruments and FX should show up at that point in the menus.

IF HS2002 supports VST at all and IF it came with a VST Wrapper.

Hmmm... you may be right 'bout the no VST support thing... I didn't see any VST wrapper in the Cakewalk folders, and I've closed and restarted HS2002 many times...

    OK...

Kinda lost still on how to get synth sounds to hear MIDI, maybe it's just not gonna work...

Thanks for everything! if anyone has any other ideas,  I'm still holding out hope (for now)...

I'm not sure when the VST wrapper came out. If you have it, it would be listed as Cakewalk VST Adapter. I think it started with HS2004, but could be wrong.
My first outing was with SHS4, and it used the adapter.
You might want to consider Music Creator 5 ($35 download). Yes, the box version has more sounds, but the download is quick and easy. VST support is integrated, and more user friendly.
While it's true your equipment is old, it should be quite capable of running MC5, SHS7, or even Sonar X1 Essentials(see my specs. I am also running a 2.4 Ghz P4)
The SoundMax is your weak link at the moment. A modest investment in a better sound card would be worthwhile, if you choose to pursue this.
Basically, I think you are trying to get radically outdated software to do what it is simply not capable of.

I don't think it did. I recall I bought the wrapper separately for like 60 bucks and then when HS2004 came out, it came with it. i remember being a little bit pissed about that.

Given how old HS2002 is, missing VST support and sketchy W7 compatability, I'd recommend spending the $79 to upgrade to Sonar X1 Essential.
Small price, and you'll bypass the issues you're facing.

Hi - another relative newbie here when it comes to actually using Cakewalk properly! I still have Home Studio 2002 on my XP machine and I remember to make it play I had to go into Options > Audio > Advanced Tab and then put a tick in the box that says "Always use MME Interface, even when WDM drivers are available". Hope that works for you if you haven't tried it.

Virtual piano is just a way of getting midi notes into your PC if you don't have a midi keyboard - you can also use the piano roll view or staff view to do this as well. It isn't needed for using the DX instruments.

Using the Soft Synths / DX instruments is a bit more complex than in later versions of SONAR - Tutorial 8 covers it pretty well. Basically you add an audio track to your project, open up the controls at the left of the track, right-click in the Fx area and then point at "DX Instruments". It will show you the ones available, click the one you want.

Then, you need to change the output on all your MIDI tracks so that they go to the soft synth - I do this by selecting all MIDI tracks then going to Track > Property > Outputs.

Hope all this makes some sort of sense - as I said, I'm fairly new to this as well!

thanks for chiming in with your experience, mcfc jason,

just want to point out, however that "always use MME..." is not a setting for using HS2002 on XP, that MME setting has to do with your soundcard and its drivers.  anyone using their onboard soundcard usually needs to use MME driver mode, but if you have a "recording" soundcard then you should NOT use MME since that would cause the highest latency.
