Using Multiple MIDI Banks

I did a search  but couldn't find anything that covers this issue.

OK, here’s a MIDI question that has me a bit confused.  I’m using an external hardware synth - Alesis QSR - with SONAR and everything is working fine.  I can switch banks & patches in SONAR and the changes show up in the QSR.  I finally got a QSR INS file to work correctly.

I have 16 MIDI channels to work with.   I’d like to use Bank 1 with MIDI channels 1 to 7, BANK 2 with channels 8 & 9, and the GM bank with channels 10-16.  I can’t find a way to use multiple banks on a single MIDI interface.

I’m now thinking that all 16 MIDI channels must be assigned to the same BANK.  Is this correct?

So a possible work around is to copy the patches I need to the USR Bank and map the MIDI channels to it.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Each MIDI track lets you select a Bank and a Patch. The QSR will have to be in multi-timbral mode where it can assign a different voice to each channel. I'm assuming it has that capability.

    Dvae,

The QSR does alow for multi-timbral mode.

I guess it is    one track = one bank at any given time.

But if I have 16 tracks each on a seperate MIDI channel, can those channels be mapped to differnt QSR banks at the same time?

That depends on the QSR. Banks are implemented differently by different manufacturers. I tried it on my Korg N1R and was able to send 3 tracks each to separate banks with 3 different patches. Sounded pretty cool.

Note: Your QSR will probably run out of resources before you hit 16 tracks especially if you use combination voices which use more oscillators than single voices.

    Thanks!

I'll continue to play with them and see what happens.
