Can not get any sound out of my VST

Got Sonar 7 and it works fine with the soft synths supplied with the installation. However when I want to play through a (free) VST soft-synth I found on the web I do not hear any sound. It is not the VST as it works fine with other progs.

What could it be?

The VST is placed in the FX bin of an audio track, and there has to be a MIDI track associated with that audio track. The MIDI track has to point to the VST in the audio track. Ensure that the volume of the audio track is at 0dB and the MIDI track is at 101. I've been bitten more than once with a MIDI track defaulting to 0 meaning I can't hear the VST.

    Thanks a lot BluesMeister

I setted up an audio track and a midi track and routed the output  of the midi track to the audio track.

Did not expected it worked this way as for the instruments which come with the installation you have to follow a totally different procedure.

No worries, Housman, so I presume it's working now?

When writing VST one assumes VST effect and I think that is what you described is my guess since it worked with an audiotrack. There is no difference in how stock plugins work and stuff that you find elsewhere.

VSTi or VST instruments are something else and need a midi track. And easiest way is to check to create a midi track when inserting the synth, and also show the gui of the synth. If setting Echo on the created midi track you are cooking and played external midi controllers are received and played.

So no need to create parts in advance unless you want to.

The tutorials are a good start...
