Sonar X1 (and 8.5.3) Error 1 "Sonar is not Installed..."

I have X1 and 8.5.3 installed.  All of a sudden when I started X1 or 8.5.3 I get a message "Sonar is not installed. Please reinstall it using your original CD (Code=1).

I reinstalled 8.5.3 and it was still the same.  I uninstalled 8.5.3 and then reinstalled 8.5, 8.5.1, 8.5.2 and finally 8.5.3 and I was still getting the same error.

On a whim, I clicked to start X1 as Administrator (I thought that was how I had it originally) and X1 came up and worked OK.  I then started 8.5.3 as Administrator and it came up and worked OK too.

I have no idea how that got changed, but both are working OK again.   The Sonar error message was very misleading.

Same thing happened with me.  I called Tech. support twice and they had never heard of that problem. I also have Windows 7.  I think it has something to do with an update that changed something in Windows that changed the compatability of all the Cakewalk products on my computer.  I did a search of the forum and saw that someone else had the problem with an earlier version of Sonar and probably Vista.  They also discovered the "Open As Administrator" workaround but it's weird.  I actually did uninstall and reinstall everything along with cleaning out the registry. It still had the error code unless I opened as Administrator.  Really weird.  It was fine before.  Anybody have a clue??? Tech support doesn't really know what's going on with this problem.

The problem was caused by installing the Studio One Demo program for most.  To fix it all you need to do is navigate to C:\ProgramData\Identities.  There will be a couple of UAC prompts as you navigate to the directories, okay them, after that Sonar should start normally without needing to "Run As"

thank you dke.  That's exactly what happened.  I bought the twenty buck promotion, installed it and then, bingo, Sonar started acting goofy.  Could you be more specific about what to do after you navigate to C:\ProgramData\Identities ? I'm a little confused by your instructions.  What directories? Thanks again. I didn't know if it had anything to do with the Studio One install or not. Why should it have affected Sonar anyway?

    Hi Pete-

There was a bug in their installer. See here.

You don't really have to do anything other than answer the prompts that UAC will put up about permissions, that will/should restore the permissions in that directory so that you can use Sonar without problems.  You may not even need to enter the Indentities directory (just the ProgramData dir) but I had already done it while looking for the reason Sonar didn't think it was correctly installed and after doing the above Sonar again worked like it should.

I don't have Studio One or any other purchased add ons.  It had to be some Microsoft update.
