Finished a tune recorded by 'My kids'

I say that because they are young enough to be, and I'm friends w/ 2 of their dads. The main singer on this (and others I'll post) was 15 when he penned/ sang them. My 11x11 mainly ITB studio has been slow to get on it's feet, as it's taken my ears about 9 months to 'learn' the room after I treated it. But I'm proud of these guys and happy to share their craft.

This one is 'Stars'. A very barebones kind of tune (not my choice, but that of 'time' - they want to release a EP soon). Stereo guitars, bass, drums, 1 vocal.
I tried to give this band a big sound - did I? Thanks for listening and your input- Shep

I just noticed how much I lose @ 128k mp3 (Guess I need a VIP account). Here's a Dropbox link @ 256k. Sounds much better...

Sounds BIG to me.  Very nice job from "the kids" .

Listening on computer speakers and everything sounds in place.

Tell them good job on the recording and writing.  Singer sounds good. Love the tone on the guitars, bass is right where it needs to be. Drums are good too.

    Going back for listen #2.

A message of hope that there is someone bigger than us. Not overtly Christian but very similar to some of the "Christian" rockers out there in the music and the way they present the message in the music. Well done.

If these guys can write a whole CD if stuff like that... they can have a future in this biz.

as you say basic tune but well played, and extremely well recorded...yes it sounds big, and very balanced. so well done on that!

btw, try Soundcloud as a Soundclick alternative - much better sound, and very easy to navigate. i like the design better too, having the waveform to look at.

yea..really cool feel to this tune....love the guitar work and the stop and pop of the kit..I'd pull back the guitars a bit @ 107 and 115...as they stomp on the vox there. At 140ish I would liked to hear a bit more bvox for more impact....@ 209 to 215ish theres a lul here which left me waiting for something to happen...I think I'd edit that section (out) and have the 2:15 build-up start right at the 209 mark...

this is a really good tune and the playing and the vox are very very good

LOVE the 228 stop n pop...

this is a really good tune and very well worked!!

Nice job all the way round!!!

Wow nice recording.  "the kids" have talent.  Very nice job on the drums.  Usually on songs like this the cymbals get washed out.  No so on your mix...Very nice...  Bet you can't tell I'm a drummer!

Excellent mix. Does sound big, wide-open. Great stereo field. I like the guitar tone very much. All around, very pro.

    And now, to be nitpicky...
    1) I wish the vocalist would sing with more conviction.
    2) The intro guitar is a touch too loud. Maybe 1db? The transition is sligihtly obvious to me.
    3) The toms sound unfinished. I know you don't have many instances to work on their tone, but they ring too much in the mid-range. They kind of have a hollow sound; more "bah" than "boo".
    4) It sounds like the kit has 2 toms. The left tom is panned maybe 40% left, and the right tom maybe 80% right. When right tom is hit, it sounds out of place compared to the rest of the kit. Partially EQ, partially due to panning. I think you should bring it in 20% or so.

    Overall, great work!

Whew - I'm glad to see that spending time much mixing seems to have helped my ear in this room. Thanks to all who listened and gave me feedback. I really like these kids and appreciate their skills for their age.

@guitarhacker - They have 3 more I'm finishing, and they are continuing to write. Hope I get to work w/ them as they grow.

@mgh - thanks much for the soundcloud tip.

@thepogue - I completely agree w/ the lul you mention. I brought that up a number of times. I couldn't bring myself to take something they all liked out...

@patm300e - it's nice to hear that people outside myself think these kids are good.
I'm not a drummer, but 2 of the best musicians I ever played with are. I learned alot about what their instrument should be like in a mix from them through the years.

@tap - thanks for the confidence boost.

@mojque - we are talking about a 15 year old vocalist in the studio for the 1st time here. Thanks for your thoughts on the important touches - I wish there was time to do more, but I hafta finish 3 more ( including recording vox for 1) for them soon.

Wow this is a really nice song, I love the guitar, it had me jamming from the first.   I felt you filled out the stereo field really nice.

Have you thought about doubling or trippling up the vocals on the chorus get it a bit fatter?   Also, I felt like the vocal's timing was a bit off turning the breakdown.

That being said, I think with a bit of polish this would a killer.  I know you mentioned time, but one thing I've noticed if I don't fix stuff when I'm working on it, then it will bother me for years as I listen to it, lol.

Garage instruments are thick in this rockoid phenomenon (if you will).  The hypercompressed master is excellent, thus forcing me to turn the volume down (twice).  But your mix gives an air of rawness and immediacy ... so I'm not sure I'd mix it differently.

Epic and top-shelf on many levels.

Message and Lyrics are almost 10/10 perfect, IMHO.

"When I see Him I see the stars" hook begs clarification (to my conscience) ... but it strikes me as a strong worship-praise statement ...
