a few questions about NAS's and using them vs USB

I am thinking about purchasing one , maybe some here use them ?

(same thing  , just bigger drives)

I'm assuming you can use NAS as a network drive and with a crossover rj45 ?

the laptop I have , is USB2 and doesn't have estata etc.. so I thought it might be another way to add a drive instead of the usual USB 2 way ? the transfer rate is via gigabyte Ethernet.. so is 1000mb ? or so.. vs 411mb on usb2 ? but obvious spin up times etc?

maybe others have thought about it, has anyone tested such a setup..

I'll end up buying one for backing up though.. just I thought this might be an interesting use.

Unless you plan to put the NAS on a network with multiple computers, it seems like an expensive solution for backup. A true NAS is a computer (albeit with a simple application and usually a simple OS) that is networked with other computers. There is some overhead associated with the operation of the NAS and with the network as well. I expect the real world results would be substantially less gratifying than comparison of the protocols/
