soundcards again

I gave up on trying to sort out my system last year amid crackles and pops and frustration, but hey ho, let's give it another go...
I have a not high spec Toshiba laptop 2GB RAM with an M-Audio Firewire 410 and Sonar Studio 6
Yesterday when trying to remember how to set it all up again, I got everything working, except, after a minute or so of recording (an electric guitar) it stopped with the DROP OUT message..

Firstly, a simple question. Is the M-Audio 410 a soundcard? Or do I need to get another one?

If the problem is partly the sound card then, apart from telling me not to get Soundblaster, could somebody please just recommend a good all-purpose one that will work...

Failing that I am off to buy a decent laptop (assuming that is the problem...) and there I am supposing that the new spec laptops should be up to the job once I get up to the £500 price range and beyond...

Thanks

the m-audio 410 is a soundcard and you do not need another soundcard.

dropout and high latency are due to the soundcard and its drivers, the CPU, RAM and Hard drive (mostly in that order).

you didn't list your CPU speed or which operating system you're using.  2G of Ram is a little low for most uses.

try changing your driver mode to ASIO and see if that helps with your dropout.  OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = ASIO.  close and restart SHS6.

and let us know more specs on your laptop and we'll let you know if you need to upgrade that or not.

    Thanks for the reply...
It is on ASIO now. I had tried both that and WDM/KS before when it kept dropping out...

Well, would you believe it? It was fine today. Must have been the threat of replacing the computer with a new one...

The CPU is AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00GHz
    Vista
    32 bit

Is that a too low spec. I was thinking of upgrading the laptop anyway.
What would you suggest would be the best speed / RAM to get?

Ah, just found out what the trouble is. It works fine without the metronome. But when I use the metronome to record on top of, it drops out... sometimes after just a few seconds, sometimes after a minute...

Is there a remedy for that? Is it a common problem?

not normally.  are you using the midi metronome or the audio metronome?  OPTIONS>PROJECT>METRNOME

    Audio metronome...

Now I know that it is the metronome and having searched for 'metronome' in the forum, I see that this is a problem that has been around for years.
One solution, that one member quite rightly got very upset about as he thought it was completely unacceptable, was to turn off the OPTIONS/AUDIO/ADVANCED/ Use Multiprocessing Engine. Which does indeed seem to work, but I presume is lowering the capability of the system in some way.

Other solutions were to use a click track, but that would be a nuisance...

and supposedly the Sonar update 6.2.2 has solved the problem for some

    but hasnt worked for me...

    ah, ok.

I don't seem to have a problem with the metronome myself, but I'm using Sonar 8.5 and now X1.
