What is a registration code for? What does it do? Why do I need one?

What is a registration code for?
What does it do?
Why do I need one?

I have one, just not sure what it's purpose is.
I got it when I registered the V-Studio 20 with the serial number provided.
Does this have something to do with why GT4/V-Studio-20 is no longer working on my computer?
Do they expire?
Do I need a new one?

Here's the closest I found in the FAQ:

What’s the difference between a “serial number” and a “registration code?”
You give us the serial number and we give you back a registration code. The serial number is the number assigned to the particular software box you received. Each unit has its own unique identifier.

Not exactly an answer.
What is the difference between a "serial number" and a "registration code"?
What do I do with the registration code?

Any help on this would be great.

Your software GT4 only works for 30 days. You have to enter the registration code which then allows you to continue using GT4 after that period. The serial number pertains to the hardware i.e your V20 Studio unit. Hope this helps.
