This is something I co-wrote with a friend of mine.  He played bass, piano and programmed the drums.  I did the orchestration and the mix.  Comments always appreciated.

Peace,

The composition sounds really good. Some suggestions on you can improve the mix to take it to the next level:

    1. The guitar palm muted track doesn't fit in the mix. It is too muddy/dark in a mix that is supposed to bright and full of life. Try to EQ the guitars to sit better and gel with the rest of the instruments.

    2. The drums are not cutting through the mix at all. They are not audible. You need to do parellel compress the entire drum track, fatten it up and get that snare cracking. It should be very audible.

    3. Add a little reverb to the snare. Boost it's crack around ~200hz (whatever sounds best).

    4. The kick needs to a boost at 80-100hz (whatever sounds best). You need to cut the equivalent amount on the bass. Make narrow cuts/boosts.

    5. There's some pumping going on with the bass guitar compression. The release value isn't set right. This is very noticeable at the beginning of the song.

    6. The bass needs to be eq'd a bit. It's not tight enough - it's more leaky and muffly, which doesn't work with the ultra crisp keys and the rest of the vibe. Kind of the same problem with the guitars actually.

Need a song, demo or album mixed to sound great? Why waste weeks or months learning how to mix when I'm sure you'd rather spend your time writing songs and performing gigs? I can mix your tracks so that they sound fantastic. My rates are very affordable. Send me a PM to find out more.

You've certainly captured the syle, but .....can't believe I'm actually gonna say this to one of the forum mix meisters.......(tremble).........but the mix doesn't sound right to me. Mainly the drums seem a bit lost and the brass type sounds are a bit too loud  - maybe altering one would solve the other issue by itself. FWIW I'd probably bring the drums forward more first and see where took me..........slinks off back to his unworthy corner............ ;)

You're exactly right. This is 100% congruent with my thoughts that I posted above as well. Some parallel compression in the drums should really do the trick as the brass is supposed to be kind of overpowered for these tunes (I checked several NHL, NBA, etc. tunes from ESPN and other networks... the brass is overpowered on all of them too actually).

I think that hearing the full-fidelity wave file will give a better picture of what the track really sounds like.  MP3 encoding is of the devil!  The wave file is about 11 megs: http://tinyurl.com/5wnjkod

Mixing rock and orchestral elements is always a challenge, but I put the brass and strings are in the forefront and the drums in the back of the mix intentionally.

    Thanks everyone,
    J

I don't watch TV all that much anymore, but I can certainly 'hear' this being used as a sports theme or something similar. Sounds great to me!

Pretty darn good song.  To make it better i would try to find a real trumpet player and maybe a Tbone guy and mult them 3 times each.

One thing that might be missing,  this is just a suggestion,  but you might try a run up to the 1st note in your phrases.  Don't start all your phrases on beat one.  A triplet or 16 note run up to your 1st note in a phrase adds a more aggressive feel to you melody.

    Good luck

I don't actually own a TV but, if I did, I can imagine hearing this before a sports or news broadcast

    Nice job!
