so will using X1 be a world of difference than using a portable keyboard?

Not too long ago the only piece of gear I had was a portable keyboard that cost me about $200.  It was very difficult to sequence on it and if I powered it off - everything would be cleared from memory.  Even though I was limited to what I could do with it - I was able to put together some decent tracks.  I wondered back then what would I be able to do with something that has a decent sequencer that allowed me to work in a way that doesn't hinder my work.  I envisioned something like X1 - especially with Skylight and the drag and drop feature.  Seeing is believing; I am definitely in the future and am looking forward to using X1 as my DAW.  I know a lot of you have used Sonar for some time so X1 may have been refreshing but not completely new in some regards.  As for myself, I know I will be in for a shock of sorts.  From a portable Yamaha keyboard to a full fledged feature rich DAW with lots of soft synths, samplers, a console mixer, a true sequencer, a large colorful GUI... wow man, this is for real.

I imagine X1 will blow your socks off when compared to just a $200 hardware keyboard with a a built in sequencer!

I would strongly recommend watching all the videos first to get a good idea of what is different from the version you are using(from your join date I would assume Sonar 6).  Pay special attention to the Smart tool, which is a great new asset, but can cause some initial confusion coming from an earlier version.
Scott Garrigus' new Power book will be out in March and that may be a great investment for you to get caught up with all the changes that have taken place from previous versions.

I came to Sonar from a similar background using a Technics keyboard.  Man, what a change.

So you've been  on the SONAR forum for five years/500 posts without owning SONAR or any other DAW program? That sure shows you're interested!

In one of your posts in 2009 you mention you're using SONAR 8, though???
