The Voyage - Christy Moore (cover)

My grandma was always annoying me to cover this song...and since she is my number one music fan I went and done it!!
It is a ballad made famous by Irish folk singer Christy Moore.

Let me know what you think, especially on the mix end.

A tad bit bit too much reverb on the lead vocals for me...Just my opinion tho.  Some people like the extra verb.  My personal opinion is this: You have a great voice don't cover it up with verb!  Some sibilance near the end of the song that is a little bothersome, but other than that nice!

What vocal mike are you using?  It really likes your voice!

    Nice harmonies in this one.

Thanks for feedback patm300e, its not the first time that Ive been told that too much reverb has been used on the lead vocal, I am conscious of this, although I thought this type of song would sound better with a good serving of it! I might drop it back a little and just manually take back a few "s" sounds at the end.

AT 2020, budget condensor really, and it has taken a considerably battering too!

Mate! This is one of my favorite tracks from when i was a lad!
The original has alot of verb on the lead vocal - so it doesn't sound out of place in your version to me.

Great great version - i've heard some of ur other stuff - i think you're one of the biggest talents on here. I really love your voice and playing.

The harmony in the chorus is slightly too loud i think. Your voice is interesting enough to survive with harmonies lower in the mix.

Great stuff! Made my night listening to this. Reminds me of holidays in Wales with my mum n dad.

I'm not familiar with it, but it's pretty. I would back your vox off a bit.

Nice job singing and the mix sounds great :-)

Oh my! That was the weirdest thing!!! No, not your song.  It was taking forever to load, so I just left it on and went to read other things.  I left the headphones on and all of a sudden I heard wind or rain or something and it almost scared me.... I had to take the phones off to see what was going on.  I finally realized it was your song.  LOL!

OK, listening now...yeah, this is a great song.  Great intro, and I'll listen again so I know what I'm listening to.  :-)  Anyway, I'm no expert, but the mix sounds good to me.  Your voice is good and it's easy to hear.  Everything sounds so well played and arranged.  That horn near the end sounds so good.  Guitars, piano, drums...all good.  Yeah, and there's the thunder (or waves?).  Great effect!!

Beautiful! I have an AT 2020 too. I like it for stereo mic'ing with the Rode NT-1000. It is also a very good main vocal mic, as you have proven here. I love this song and your performances are top notch!

I didnt know the song before this but yea, beautifull!!  Excellent job in both performance and production.
Reminded me of my time in Portumna, Co Galway, where in nearly every pub we entered there was groups of musicans performing traditional songs.... superb.
Maybe I did this the wrong way round but I started reading the comments before I got to listen and so I was instantly listening out for the reverb. However i only found it mildly too much at the points of siblence and I dont think it drives the vocal down into the mix at all.
The sustained note of the oboe (I think) at around 2.30 popped out a little too much to my ears. That bit sounded quite harsh on my monitors.
Lovely job and I can only aspire to your skills
    Cheers

Thanks thornbird, welcome to the forums.

Monkfish01, I touched back on the main reverb a tad just so that it would take the washiness out of those "s"es. clarinet...close...It didnt stick out to me, I will relisten at a higher volume. Galway, beautiful spot, even If I am on the opposite end of the Island!

Thank you James, Christy would be relatively well known over in the scottish Isles, especially in the pub scene!
