MB Processor upgrade question

I have an older Intel PC (early dual core) with Windows XP Pro and would like to upgrade the mother board and processor to an I7.

Does anyone know if the HAL is compatible?  Will I be able to boot up and re-install drivers?

Thanks,

Ken

    Not so easy.
    look here,
    here, and this thread.
I finally managed it, but don't think I would try it again. (Turns out I did not have a license issue because I was using a full license, not an OEM license.)

What if I'm just replacing a bad motherboard with the same brand and model ?  I found a Intel D865PERL on e-bay and I'm replacing a bad Intel D865PERL.

For the minimization of issues arising further down the road I think a like for like replacement is the ONLY circumstance where I would even attempt to keep the installed OS without doing a complete re-install.  Even then I'd be considering whether it was time for a fresh install.

On the other aspect, the licensing issue, even with an OEM license, which is the only circumstance you would be affected by any licensing provisos, you are covered with a like for like replacement.

If the motherboard is replaced because of a defect, the user does not need to acquire a new operating system license for the computer. The motherboard replacement must be the same make and model, or the same manufacturer’s replacement or equivalent, as defined by that manufacturer’s warranty.

Also Be aware, SOME of your software plug ins MAY require reauthorization because of the hardware (MB) change, since some of thier license schemes are tied to hardware IDs.

    Thanks everyone -

I've done quite a few same HAL swaps, but I'm not finding much info on the i-7 HAL. I'll look at the links that bvideo referenced.

I did attempt a windows 7 partition from an I5 Dell laptop to a optiplex 360 without much luck.  But in that case I was just looking at options for upgrades for my job, so I decided it wasn't worth the bother as I could just make a correct image.

OHHey - I don't think you will have much of a problem updating the same family motherboard.

Ah, you use to be able to do that up to about Windows 98. Since the hardware needs drivers from windows, I do think you can not do that anymore because Microsoft wants more money i the end and every computer must have a separate OS. I think if you had the full version maybe up to Windows 2K you might do it by completly starting over installing the OS. After that, no, even though XP is not all that different than 2K just better in the end. Mostly the same base code though. Just 2K is not even as good as XP in any means.

What is your CPU chip installed in the computer determines the difference will increase the speed of the computer. For example, if you only upgraded to a 486DX2 486DX you will not notice much speed increase. Even in the 486DX4 you really will not notice much change in velocity more. In addition, if you are in the ship 486 Pentium chip, you will not get the speed of a Pentium computer, because you have a Pentium board.
