Questions about upgrading to win7x64

I'm considering upgrading to win7x64 and I can't figure out a couple of things.

1) what exactly would the "win xp mode" buy me for the difference in price between home premium and professional version?  If I get home premium does that mean that software like sonar won't work in xp mode on the 64bit win7?

2) when they talk about "64bit processors" as a minimum requirement for the 64bit OS - how can you tell which processors are 64bit architecture?  I have an LGA 775 socket Q6600 - is it 64bit?

the reason I am considering upgrading is mainly to take advantage of higher RAM for softsynths and FX in Sonar (that and I'm having problems running X1 on my XP machine anyway and moving to 64bit might resolve that issue).

I found this link that talks about 64-bit motherboards.  Hopefully this will help and YES you have a 64-bit motherboard (based on this link).

The XP mode with Win7professional is a virtual machine. It is a lifesaver if you have a scanner or printer that has no Vista/7 driver available (maybe) or if you are running some not-so-demanding and not updated for Win7 application that will run on XP but will not run on Vista. There is some considerable overhead with running a virtual machine. It is not a good idea to try to run Sonar XP or most other real time audio apps under XP emulation. There are some other reasons to use Win 7 pro, but they are mostly useful in a business network environment. Like the ability to use the native backup to a network share for example, or the ability to make copies of data using restore points so that you can find earlier versions of files. There is also a limit on the amount of memory addressable in Win 7 home vs pro, but it would take a lot more memory than I can afford (or most MB will support) to make a difference.

Almost anything these days is a 64 bit processor. Yours is. Almost any motherboard chipset that will accept a 64 bit processor will run a 64 bit os. The XP mode under Win 7 initially would run only on processors that has "hardware emulation" built in, but even that is no longer a requirement.

Whether your problems with the 32 bit Win 7 and XP will resolve with an 64-bit OS is a pure crap shoot. More likely than not, you will find more problems with the switch.
