Cowboy...

I grew up in New Mexico and although my family had horses I never
considered myself a cowboy. I had many friends that were.
(so yeah...even though I haven't recorded any, I have strong roots
in country music)

Here is a cowboy. Here is his website art.
I think it's just amazing what he can do with a pencil and wanted
to share something I think is very special....even if he's a Texan. :)

Wow, he's pretty amazing.  Thanks for sharing.  When I start working again I think I'll buy some of his prints.

Makes me want to start drawing and painting again too.  I used to be pretty good, but somehow got out of it.

Wow...he IS good, Michael.  All of my family (but me) ARE cowboys (and girls) and they all love this type of art (and decorate with it.)   Thanks for sharing that.    (I had to move away from the farm too young to get that good at riding, etc.)

    Mark, start again! :-)

I was hoping it would be cool.
I miss a lot of it. Lot of fun memories cuttin' horns and stuff.
    Just kickin' dirt.

Years ago I use to watch a painter on TV named Bob Ross.
My wife would get a kick out of how "into it" I'd get. One day I said
"I could do that"....man she showed up with all the paint and stuff
and told me to put up or shutup cowboy...lol...I had to paint pictures
for lot's of folks...I think they were being kind.
I really did enjoy Mr. Ross.

I had a good friend in my teens that could draw like the cowboy but he
used Bic pens. He tried to get Bic to buy his art and make a commercial
    or somethin'...he was good.

Janet I wouldn't have thought that. One just doesn't seem to meet very
many real cowboys any more...or it seems that way to me.
Rowdy, but that's alright. I never did mind it. I traded my ride for a Harley...
don't think that'll change unless my wife has her way. She just loves horses.

There is an old law on the books in Arkansas....It's illegal to play a guitar
while riding a horse in town. lol..

I guess it may depend on what you call a real cowboy, but my dad raised cattle and only ever used horses to round them up, etc.  (I can't imagine him checking the cattle on a 4-wheeler, like so many to do today!)  :-)  My brother keeps 3-4 horses and does a lot of team-roping (and often wins).  He also breaks horses for people.  My sister's also a team-roper (dad wouldn't let her start till she graduated) and made it to the Women's National Finals.  Her husband also has horses and ropes.  They definitely dress like cowboys, if that makes a difference. :-)

    Thank for the link,

    That is incredible art.

My dad used to go out of his way to show me Fredrick Remington artwork... bought me books etc.

Florida actually has a lot of Cow farming and my dad knew some of the old time cowboys so we grew up with an appreciation for the lifestyle and work-craft.

    best,
    mike

Wow! It's actually a little weird for me to read your posts about Cowboys and I realize that for you in the US, cowboys are real. Over here, they've always been fiction

But that's beautiful art. Thanks for the link Spacey. That's a kind of art I really love, something that tells a story and depicts an era in history of a certain region. Art, in all of it's forms, is basically a way of communication. The best way to experience the history of a place is to see what talented people made into art. IMO, a painting or photography is the best way to express the athmosphere of a place and preserve a moment for eternity so others can experience it too. Whenever I go to a new place (or even re-visit) I always visit the national galleries, and that's usually my favourite moments when I travel.

    ProjectM-
First off, all of you are welcome and I'm glad I posted this.
One cool thing about Mr. Asher is his art is of his life, his friends.
I sure would like  him to draw something on a Tele for me.
I may jump on my Harley and take me a cruise to Snyder Texas.
Now that would be a great ride!

    Re:Cowboy... 2011/02/12 09:09:39 (permalink)
    Thought I'd share a story;

Years ago, I think it was the early 70's I went to visit
one of my cowboy friends. His family went way back
    as settlers in New Mexico.
He liked to rodeo. He had hurt his foot in one the day before and it had swollen up
and when I walked in he was slicing open his boot. ( if he had taken it off
he wouldn't get it back on so it wasn't anything "strange" or unusual to see)

So I sat there shootin' the bull while he finished.
What we were talking about was his new adventure in business.
He had brothers and many cousins and they were all very good at making
money and a lot of it.
His new business was braided belts. He had Navajo Indians that would
braid them and he had big sewing machines in the garage that he would
sew the leather on the ends, box 'em up and send them to retail stores.
Yes he was the originally maker and designer of those belts and they became
a very big item....well they had already taken off...I was just then seeing who was
    making them.
Now what made me think of this was he was a good artist.
While we were talking I remember admiring this full cut of leather hanging
on the wall above the couch. He had hand-tooled a branding scene on it.
    Very detailed and life-like.
I guess it's kinda funny that their are folks you'd never suspect or expect to have
such an amazing amount of artistic abilities. He was one.

Cool story.  I hadn't thought about this for a long time, but when I was little, my dad would draw pictures of horses in church to entertain us.  I don't remember being surprised then at how life-like they were, but as I think about it, they were really quite good.  I don't remember him drawing anything else, but I imagine he could have been a good artist if he'd cared to.

Wow!  I bet most people that see one of his prints for the first time would think he does black and white photos!  Amazing detail...

I will never complain about hand-entering MIDI drum parts again!  (Ok, well, I'll try not to anyway...  )

    Very nice, spacey.
I like the way he works the light. And that level of detail is bordering on intense.
Pencil is a great medium. It can be tedious, but you get into a mindset, and don't really notice.
I remember Bob Ross. He was fun to watch.
