Qustion about the browser in Sonar X1
Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading to Sonar X1 and I have some questions about the browser. These may be stupid questions but I haven't found any relevant info in videos or forums 1) Does the browser allow you to search for an item? Ideally using dynamic filtering so that as you type the list gets smaller. It looks like it has a text box but its not obvious what this does. 2) Can you create bookmarks for your favorite items? 3) Does the browser integrate with virtual instruments such as Dimension allowing you to browse/search its presets? The marketing stuff says "Drag and drop just about anything you can think of from the Browser directly to your workspace" Thanks Peter

Hi Peter, 1. Yes, sort of. You can enter some filter text, so if you are displaying a folder full of samples for example, you can enter something like 'a*.wav' into the filter to display all wav files beginning with 'a' in that folder. However, I don't think the filter searches subfolders, just the current folder. 2. Yes, you can save your favourite locations (folders) and easily go to them by selecting them from a dropdown list. 3. No, you can't browse virtual instrument presets. I would love to see that too! Perhaps you should have a look at the free preset browser VST 'Zen' by Big Tick software ( http://www.bigtickaudio.com/zen/about-zen). There is a VST than comes with SONAR that lets you browse presets from Cakewalk VST's though, but I can't remember what it's called, or vouch for it because I haven't used it much yet (anyone care to elaborate?). Just type the Name in the text box. When you do this you'll see the list getting smaller.

Thanks Just out of interest I can see that adding Cakewalk VSTs will be pretty straight forward but adding third parties would require some sort of industry standard like MIDI or Music.xml for describing what presets a VST has, or can presets be obtained via the VST interface?

I just stumbled on Zen through KvR and it seems like a heck of a good idea, though none of my "go to" synths are on the list at the moment and it appears to be 32-bit only. This would be an EXCELLENT feature for an upcoming X version! Imagine a pane in the browser that displays all of the patches for your soft synths with a search box. Want a piano? Type "piano" and the list zooms down to a dozen or so from a few different synths. Want an airy pad? Same deal. Drag and drop that to the track view and the appropriate synth could be added automatically and configured for the right sound. And if there was some way to update this - like importing an instrument definition or typing in user-specific keywords - we could add configurations for our outboard gear. I know we have this kind of search within a single synth, and that's definitely cool. But imagine how much cooler it would be if we chose the patch type first, and THEN the synth? With something like 20,000 patches from which to choose, this makes me all warm just thinking about the possibility. Technically, it sounds like a lot of work. But wow, does any other DAW have anything like this? We're always looking for that quantum leap feature; could this be it?

BlindDog, try the very latest Zen beta- you can now use any vst synth with it. And yes, I agree with you, I think DAW manufacturer should really think about the benefits they would get by integrating it....
