CPU Jump and Extreme Distortion (Why?)

Hi All

This is a new one for me.

I have a track that's almost completed from about 7 months ago.

I've played this track probably hundreds of times for different reasons including mixing, editing, re-recording various parts and just for enjoyment!

I've never, in any of these instances had a problem with playback until today.

I haven't altered this project for at least 3-4 months now, but have played it back several times with out incident.
But today I opened the project and began playback and it began to playback flawlessly as usual untill it reached the chorus of the song. Suddenly the CPU goes off the charts and into the red! It continues to playback but with breaks and sputters.
I stop, rewind, and try again. Now it it begins it's oddity at the beginning of the project.
I close Sonar 8.5.3, reopen the project and the problem is identical: Upon first attempt of playback it plays flawlessly until it reaches the chorus of the song and then begins with CPU in the red, breaks in the audio, and sputters. Then I start the project again and the problem starts immediately at the beginning!

I am baffled by this. This project seems to be the only one out of about 80 projects that I have recorded that behave in this manner!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what causes this behaviour (and maybe a solution?)

Harpo

Does it still happen after bypassing all plugins? If not, start removing effects one at a time starting with buss effects, until the problem goes away. It is most likely a buggy plugin, probably one with a lookahead buffer (e.g. a linear-phase equalizer) that's not being flushed.

I'll try that bitflipper, then I'll let you know the results.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hey Bitflipper.

Your suggestion was the way to go.
I disabled all plug-ins and the problem dissapeared, so now I have to take the painstaking route to one by one try to find exactly who's the culprit!!

What I don't understand though is, "why this project would play flawlessly for over 3 months, and just now suddenly decide to behave in this manner?"

The wonderful world of digital audio I guess?

    Thanks again bitflipper!

why this project would play flawlessly for over 3 months, and just now suddenly decide to behave in this manner?

You may have installed some other software that updated a library file that the plugin also referenced, and the newer version has a bug or works differently or is otherwise incompatible. Once you identify the offending plugin, you'll want to check if there is a newer version available that may have fixed the incompatibility. Whenever I've encountered these kinds of problems, the problem plugin has always turned out to be a freebie made with one of the building-block development kits. I don't use those kinds of plugins anymore for that reason.

Nice one Bitflipper :) Same thing happened to me here. Found that NI Guitar Rig was the culprit in my case!
