Input Echo: Auto Thru

The help file says the options for the input echo button are On and Off, however my options are On and Auto Thru.  What is the difference between these two choices?

Are you looking at a MIDI track? Those look like the options a midi track would give you. Audio Track should be on/off.

Also - are you using SONAR VS - the software that came with the VS-100?

Yes, I am using Sonor VS. On the audio tracks, the options appear to be On & Off, while on instrument and midi tracks the options appear to be On & Thru.  I'm just trying to get a sense of what the functions of this button are.  Thanks much.

After discovering that this topic is covered under Input Monitoring (and not the name of the button), I need to amend my post a bit.  First, I'm still unclear as to what Auto Thru is used for. Second, I am hearing the echo that is described in the help file when monitoring a track (in this case, a vocal track).  However the help file discusses remedies when the instrument or mic is plugged into the sound card.  I'm plugging into the VS-100 control surface.  Is there a way of eliminating the echo on a vocal track while recording if you want to monitor?  Thanks.

On & Auto Thru is only going to be relevent when you are tracking midi. To be really honest, I don't do a lot of midi and can't give a clear explanation of those. Maybe someone else that records a lot of midi can chime in. It means nothing when tracking Audio.

As for ON/OFF on audio, that I understand a lot more. With Input Monitoring ON - the audio you are recording will be directed back to the output so you can hear it. This is useful if you need to hear effects while tracking, or when your hardware doesn't allow you to monitor the input with the output.

However you have a VS-100. This allows you to monitor at the hardware level. Unless you really need to hear the effects added with Sonar, I would recommend you monitor directly through the VS-100. When I use my VS-100 I always turn input monitoring off.
