Help! "Used Sonar" and registration
As far as I've understood Sonar does not allow transfering the registration onto another person. If I buy it used, will I be able to use Sonar 6 Producer without registering it as long as I have the keys and original software? Thanks!

...Oh, ok, thank you. Does anybody know where you can buy old versions of Sonar that are new and that you can register?

this question may be a little to complicated for anyone to answer...but i will try...i believe its against policy rules to byu a used version of sonar or cakewalk and try to regester it..your just asking for trouble...ie buy it and they dont send the regestration)your better off just buying one new..for the price your going to pay for some secondhand version you may have complications regestering, you can get a new copy..depending on how indeph you wanna get.i think 8.5 producer is 150.00 with specials and such..do yourself a favor..get a new one..dont get busted or banned for trying to jerry rig a used copy or pirate job..do the right thing. (please be advised as i cant promice everything i said is true, just what i believe to betrue)

Chuckebaby, in post #3 the OP is not talking about second hand versions, but new/unused copies of older versions, ones that can be registered, as he clearly states. Sometimes you can find those old versions in netshops, but you can also get cheated if you buy from other than a known, reliable company. Buying a new one is the recommendable way, though. However, if the budget is limited, one doesn't have to buy Producer. X1 Essential or Music Creator might do for starters. They are powerful tools, both.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Thank you for your posts. I did find an older version in a netshop (totally legal!) and am very excited about getting started! Now I just have to learn it... haha

You're most likely right Chuckebaby. The guy only wanted to check what are the chances of getting "caught" somehow..

I'd just like to clarify, I did not just want to check my chances of getting "caught". I thought it'd be ok to install and use a program if I purchased the original disc, "used". (not copied!) Especially if the former owner had it uninstalled from his computer... But, then people here started talking about getting "caught" and that seemed to be illegal. Buying a new and UNUSED older version then seemed like a much better idea to me. And I'm glad I did. Hoping we can drop this now and get on with recording...

Fair enough. If you can register that copy of SONAR, then you know it really is a legal one.

It's a known fact that you can purchase older versions of SONAR legally at music shops. It's 100% sure there are SONAR 7 and 8 versions on the shelves of music shops somewhere. I share your suspicion, at least some of it, Chuckebaby, but we have no way of checking what the OP is doing. In another thread he's asking advice for recently purchased SONAR 8. There's one forumite who complains about X1 and other stuff in a noob-fashion, even though he's joined the forum five years ago and has a high post count. He explained how excited he's about getting his first DAW ever starting with X1, having only used a simple hardware workstation untill now. And in a 3 year old post he says he's using SONAR 8. So it's likely an "inherited" forum membership...but what if it is... we can't help it. No big crime...and there's reasonable doubt.

I'm a newbie at recording and I'm brand new at this website, I'm just trying to learn stuff and am asking questions just like everyone else as I go along. I bought my software just the other day and since I formulated the first entry, up top - awkwardly - I agree, I've been treated with suspicion. I definitely understand and respect the point with buying software the legal way, and did so. Nuff said.

I bought a b-grade copy of another product (not a cakewalk thing) all because the box was dented..saved £40.. got it home and it'd been registered.. this was shop bought.. anyway turned out previous owner had registered it.. so the company in question saw I'd bought it from a main supplier and it wasn't an issue (well after I got them to listen..lol) it's tricky sometimes as it's the license we pay for , not the medium it's carried on (the cd/dvd etc)

Probably not the best place to post this. if there's a better way let me know.... A friend at work has given me Sonar 8 Producer. He no longer uses it and doesn't do anything musical anymore and would rather see it getting used than gathering dust.... There is a serial number on the box and a product registration number written on as well in the space provided. There is NO Email address in the gap below. Would I be able to use it? If so, I will buy a computer or laptop exclusively for it.. Thanks all.

Well, you probably could use the software but then - you have no copyright option in the software used bought from another person. Buying Music Creator 6 or whatever would give about the same thing (except the version is cut down), but if you are not recording a band with several tracks at once, and only two tracks at a time and just starting out, it probably would be cheaper and work as long as you have a computer that can use it (like Windows 7 - 8 maybe Vista). A lot of us used Music Creator (whatever version 4 is my latest one I used and bought until Sonar) and had fun using it. Learning it which correlates into using a Sonar better version and no one had to worry about registration, and the biggest worry of all - always needing a patch usually with any software bought nowadays. At say what - $40 - there's a lot that can be done with Music Creator whatever version - say 6 for the latest one. And or Sonar Essential which would be even better and not much more perhaps (have to check prices). The copyright option is for your music, not the software, as the owner and creator of the music. (the software is also copyrighted also though as the software from the company that made it - just like you make your music). If he registered the software than any music produced in the software would actually be in his name, and not your name.
