Jools Holland at Dubai Media City last night.
'Twas am outdoor concert on a typical Dubai winter's night (i.e. you need a light jacket) Three acts, Mica Paris, Alison Moyet and Jools Holland's rhythm and Blues Orchestra as part of the Dubai Jazz Festival. The venue is small enough that even in the cheap standing area you could see every thing and feel involved, actually we were a lot close that than those who had payed around $250 for the "VIP terrace".
Alison Moyet was in great voice, along with the newer material it was interesting to hear some of the old Yazoo songs done in a more jazzy/bluesey way, no synths, Piano, bass, guitar and drums. And as as Alison said. "we have no samples, no computers".
And what a great show Jools puts on, some great soloists, great vocalists and Jools piano. Guests included 76 year old veteran Ska and Reggae vocalist trombonist Rico Rodriguez. Drum solos may be regarded as naff these days, but tell that to the audience last night when Gilson Lavis let rip.
The only fly in the ointment, idiots talking resulting in annoying level background noise, particularly during Alisons set. The seemed to have no interest in the music, beats me why ay one would pay $75 for a ticket and then just sit around talking to their mates ignoring the music.
