Hi guys
Can any one help me figure this out ?
Ok so I am needing to upgrade my ammount of pres at the momment i have just the VS-700 so thats 8 ( I am useing all 8 now )
I am needing a tottal of at least 20 thats includeing the 8 i have in the Vs700.
12 of them will be just for my drum kit.
SO I was hopeing to buy 2 x Octo-captures and that would be me up to 20 pres BUT I spoke to roland and I am limited to conecting just one Octo-Capture.
No you can't connect more than 2 Octa-Capture/VS-700R at the same time. In fact you cannot connect more than 1 sound card at a time. It is an ASIO limitation.
The Octa-Capture and the VS-700R are both sound cards, obviously, cause they are connected to your computer via usb and handle all the audio. Fortunately, Roland figured how to connect TWO sound cards at the same time to get more I/O, BUT, only work with any combination of Octa-Capture/VS-700R.
So, 1st, choose which sound card will complete your VS-700R the best:
VS-700R = 8 mic pres, 8 adat inputs, (its 2 spdif inputs are needed to sinc the VS-700R, so can't be used to expand input number) - total= 16 more possible mic pres to your computer
Octa-Capture= 8 mic pres, 2 spdif inputs - total= 10 more possible mic pres to your computer
Then choose what will fill the optical connectors.
Mic pres with aes/spdif converter? Check Joemeek twinQ, DBX 386, Art MPA II, API A2D, etc... or Google "spdif mic pre". You'll get 2 mic pres.
Mic pres with adat? Check Focusrite, Presonus, etc... or google "mic pre adat". You'll get 8 mic pres.
So I would need an Octo-Capture and another 8 mic pres.....
Yes, an Octa-Capture and an adat preamp.
Is there any benifit for me to buy the Octo-capture at all then or would I be best to just buy 16 pre amps ?
Where will you connect these 16 preamps? In your sound card? Yes.
So you need to expand your sound card first cause 1x VS-700R will only give room for 10 more preamps, MAX.
So you need an Octa-Capture for 8 more pres and 8 adat preamps, connected the VS-700R, for 16 more pres and a total of 24. (you loose the 2 spdif inputs on the VS-700R, needed to sync the 2 units togheter).
If you get another VS-700R and fill everything you'll get a $hit load of mic pres... 36 mic inputs...
I am a bit confused by all of this so I hope some one can help me at the momment I see above as beeing my options but I am open to other sugestions
Thanks for all your help
Norrie
Hope it was somewhat helpful!
Edit: I made a mistake, actually, Roland suggest to use the Octa-Capture as the master clock, so the VS-700R use it's spdif/aes input to recieve the clock from the Octa, hence loosing its 2 digital input to connect something else.
