OT:Temperature

i7 920-idle and startup in Real Temp and Core Temp used to be 40-45C. Now it's 62-67c-Hot. All fans are OK-
Before I tackle this tedious job-
I am thinking the heat sink fins might be full of crud and\or the HSF needs new thermal compound and a re seating. It's been about a year i think since I built it. Seem\feels tight as hell though?
BTW-Asus Bios Hardware monitor says 37 MB and 43 CPU? Thing is Real temp always use to read in the 40's also.
what to do? what to do?
Edit:blew out heat sink fins still hotttt

It could be any number of things... Something simple like the ambient (room) temps are higher than before. Windows power setting not turning on fans until later (higher temps). etc etc

Have you manually overclocked or used 'automatic' overclocking?
Automatic overclocking typically will continue to adjust parameters to try and reach predetermined baselines. However, these baseline do not take into account prolonged use (+1yr) and so will continue to push voltages.
More voltage -> more current -> more heat...

Try returning all settings to stock and compare temps... other than that, best to jump onto an overclocking forum.

    Hey stratman, I have an i7 920 with Asus P6TSE and 12 gig ram and Win7 64bit with X1 64bit.

How do I check the temperautre on my system so we can compare?

    Hey A1

You can go into setup-their is a hardware monitor in the bios. Also, just google Realtemp360. It's a tiny app, free and techs online swear by it.

No OC here- I would have mentioned it. Never have in my life. Anyhow, never heard of voltage changing like that on it's own? I did reset the bios to defaults, 1st thing-no change. Rea;temp amd cool temp both going nuts but Asusu Probe 2 and bios HW monitor both read like realtemp use to read? Very weird. Wonder if some software change or addition has screwed up realtemp and core temp? doesn't seem likely . That is why I am stumped.
BTW, old retired M$ tech here-many moons ago.
    Thanks

re those quiet? A new HSF would be a good idea I am sure. I just ordered a new antec case-I have been using Antec cases for many, many years. I ordered the P183v3. I wanted a case with a CPU cutout and thick walls. This one has that.
Thanks, I'll check on some "quiet" coolers.

My bad... I just guessed with those temps it was OC'ed.

So currently +60C with no OC? Damn... that is rather hot (assuming that's idle temp and not max load temp).

Have you changed OS settings like core parking, power settings etc? Installed any new hardware - which might be blocking flow? Moved the case?

Something to try - leave the case open and see if temp drops (make sure you don't have a cat etc that will poke it's head inside!). If temp drops heaps - then you have a case cooling issue...

That's OK-No and no. Changed core parking to the recommended settings on the forum about a year ago. Open case does nothing. I am pretty good building my own stuff. Been doing it for many yers. Never had a problem like this before. It's been a year for the i7 920. But honestly, I don't think I have checked the temp in months. So whatever happened could have happened 2 months ago. But i have not changed\removed or added any HW in a year either. well, a USB 3.0 OCIe card-but that was 6 months ago. Video card is around 35 degrees as always. I am getting a bit worried because I have no backup Daw. And it's all I do besides day job. I guess I have to reseat the HSF-not much choice. I mean it is in the game.
I am going to check out speedfan as Rick suggested. But if it's a controller for the fans it won't help.
    Going to look now.
BTW-I have 120mm in the front blowing in across my hd's and MB. I hav a 120mm pulling oit the bcak. I also have a corsair TX650 which has a fan on the bottom and pulls heat away from the cpu. ??? I will reseat this puppy tomorow and post back
    Thanks

         you is top rated...

if you run Prime95 for 10-15 minutes and have coretemps 80+ degrees, the heatsink should be uncomfortably hot to the touch. If it isn't, it suggests the processor doesn't transfer heat to the heatsink as it should, and you should try reseating it. (You will need new thermal paste.)

Speedfan is very nice-Thanks PC has been on since 4:30pm EST about 5.5 hours. Speedfan reads CPU as 52c-system(MB I guess) as 40c and GPU as 38. That's more like it.
Something really must have screwed up realtemp -I did uninstall and reinstall and also then installed coretemp-both read high 60's for cpu67-68?
Still am reseating the HSF tomorrow. I am off all day
    Thanks everyone for your inp[ut.
I will post back after I redo the HSF

    Have you setup manually Vcore.
    Some motheboards sometimes overvolt ...

For quiet cooling you could take a look to Noctua products.

I think its this more than anything. You could also try adding 3rd party coolers like has been suggested already. Even one of this PCI slot fans could help.

use acutake coolers on chassi running at 12v. buy extension cables wich transform the 12v to 9v so the fan speed is decreased. acutake coolers in general are extremely quiet and with the extension cables you don't listen to them at all. I'm currently using 3 chassi coolers and 3 HDD coolers and i have an amazing quiet pc with super low temperatures.

    sincerely,
