Plug-in problem mc5

Earlier i bought MC5 from best-buy....
And i'm honestly not pleased..
I know it's pathetic, but i'm actually crying.
$40 dollars is a lot to me... and it barely works!

I've been trying to understand other threads, but i can't.
I start it up, the program i paid for, and it can't find the guitar plug-in, or whatever..i try starting it up in hip-hop, and it can't find a synth.
I'm extremely disappointed.

Can someone please help me out...
Also,  do i need an instrument to plug-in to create music..because i don't have them money to go out and buy a drumset...and a guitar....and a piano...

guitar plugin?  do you mean amplitube?  starting it up in "hip-hop"?  what does that mean?

I'm sorry, I'm not following what you're trying to do.

you can create just about any instrument sound you want using MIDI and a softsynth.  MIDI can be entered using a MIDI keyboard or just by clicking with the mouse (although that's pretty time consuming).

have you tried doing the tutorials in the help files?  when you first start MC it pops up a dialog box and at the bottom there's a link for "GETTING STARTED" which leads you to the help tutorials.

Also, do i need an instrument to plug-in to create music..because i don't have them money to go out and buy a drumset...and a guitar....and a piano...

While Music Creator is a recording program, you can make songs with no physical instrument at all, by entering MIDI data with your mouse, choosing which instrument sounds you want. You can use the MIDI Piano Roll view (PRV) or the Staff view to enter music notes.
Then you need to hear it. Without a MIDI keyboard or MIDI sound module, you have to use software synthesizers to hear the MIDI notes. Several are included with MC 5; TTS-1, Sound Center and Studio Instruments Drums.
You can also paste in audio clips or loops to make backing tracks.
But these things take longer to learn, and to do, than simply plugging in a guitar and mic and recording them.
So roll up your sleeves and start reading. Do the tutorials, ask questions here if you get stuck. But it's going to take time and effort on your part to get to the desired result; a song.

Ah, the first day. I remember that.
It's easier than it looks, but at first it is rather daunting. And it is complicated, but you can learn it in small parts.
If this is new ground for you (as it was for me) much of it is not intuitive.
Do the tutorials as suggested. push buttons and see what happens. You won't break it.
Above all, DO NOT PANIC. Step away from it if you need to.
Contrary to what it says on the box, it's a bit of a ride, and we've all been there. Take your time, relax. It will come to you. Really.

Ebeach.... I can understand how frustrating this is to a beginner.....I was there and so was everyone else here. Well.... maybe not Beagle..... he open the software and immediately composed a symphony, the next day, cakewalk techs were calling him for advice when they were stumped.

We know it's not a "cakewalk" for most people. There is a learning curve and you will likely want to buy a better sound card because the computer sound card will not work smoothly with MC5 especially if you're wanting to run synths. (TTS, Sound Center, etc). You can run small audio only projects on a factory card using the right audio drivers.  We'll do our best to help get you to that point.

SO..... tell us about the computer you are using and the sound card. We'll start at the beginning and try to work with you to get it working. Be patient and understand, we are not cake staffers..... just a bunch of musicians helping other musicians get started  in home recording. The advice we give will generally be accurate and will help you to get started.

MC5 is a VERY capable recording package. With the right gear, and learning how to use it, you can produce radio ready projects.  Ultimately, it's in your hands, we'll help, and answer questions and offer things to check and do, but you need to learn the computer and the software..... we'll try to guide you. Jump in, have fun, learn, and make music.

If you're talking about Ampltube, that's an effect for an audio track. You record a real guitar, add Amplitube to the effects bin and it will alter the sound for you. It won't play by itself.
    Which link?

right - amplitube is an AMP SIMULATOR, not a "guitar synth"

you can still program guitar licks in the PRV and send them to Cakewalk Soundcenter or TTS-1 for guitar sounds, but it's very difficult to emulate a real guitar.

yep probably right... the factory sound card.

THis is recording software... so you need something to input real music or you can use loops and other cool things to create music without instruments.

no, sorry, but there are guitar sounds in TTS-1 and Soundcenter.  and you can make MIDI tracks to trigger the guitar sounds in either of those synths and then run those thru the amp similator to make it sound better!

well, something's wrong then because there are 256 different sounds available in TTS-1.  piano1 is only the first one.  you may be looking at the USER BANK which is populated with piano1 until you overwrite it with something else.  click on the BANK and choose a different BANK - i'm not at my DAW now to verify exactly what it is, but you should be able to choose another one and find them.

ebeach - you REALLY need to look at the tutorials in the help files.  they will explain it with pictures and hands on directions for you.  there are bank settings on the face of TTS-1 and there are bank settings in the MIDI track properties.  these are covered in the tutorials.

if you buy a MIDi cable to hook up your keyboard then yes, you can play the parts on the keyboard.  but you have to have a MIDI port on your comptuer for that to work.  you either have to have a soundcard that has a MIDI port on it or you have to buy a MIDI/USB cable instead.

I'm often less diplomatic than the ever patient fellow forumites:

Ebeach....hand on your heart... did you not feel even a little embarrassed to admit that you had not even tried the help files before sending your lamenting first post? "I'm crying...40 dollars is much to me...!!"LOL

The learning curve can be a bit of a drag if one has no knowledge at all of these things, but it's worth it to struggle forward, it really is. If you don't have the patience to read and study, then maybe this isn't a hobby for you.

I would not spend a second on trying to help someone who  openly admits he hasn't done the least and most obvious himself. If you're 10 or 12 years old, it's somehow forgivable, though.

I also suggest doing some research on what midi is and how it works.  Plus if you are wanting to make specific sounds like hiphop style guitars and synths you might want to do some internet searches for Acidized loops and learn to insert those in audio tracks to build tracks. You need to put in the work and learn what the parts are. The piano roll will get you started, you can enter notes or "bars" as it looks and then assign that to play thru the synths and tell it what patch to play. Add acidized loop audio to it and build some nice sounds.

If you do not invest the time to learn what the componants are and what they do it will be a very long learning process. I read everything i could get my hands on. I illustrate this process with the concept of learning an instrument. If you want to learn to play the guitar it takes practice time, hard work, and persistance. Recording is the same. No one picks uip a guitar and plays Hendrix the first time. No one installed MC and records a grammy winning Cd the first day. Read, Learn, ask targeted questions and perfect the craft.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

Go to my web site. I have some stuff there on working with TTS and having it set up to play 3 instruments at the same time. That should also help you understand more about midi, [patches and channels.

Go here>>>  direct link      and dig in and experiment. There is a tutorial there to help you create a drum track from scratch in a few minutes total time.

There are programs that will create music tracks for you but that are very expensive. If you learn what to do in MC, you can do some pretty amazing things musically with midi and loops.

Kalle is from Finland, and since it is winter he has not seen the sun for weeks!  But he brings up a good point, this is a very difficult process to learn, with many very complex issues. We are very willing to help you, and will try to see you get pointed in the right direction. Still before getting to frustrated you must put in the work. Doing research, study and learning. There is a reason that recording techs, and engineers get paid well for their time.

We users have to stick together and learn the hard way. So hang in there and ask targeted questions. Also try to be rather Thick skinned, since we are users, not cakewalk employees, we will send you to your room to do your homework at times!!

We're not a rude bunch of people here for the most part. We are users, just like you, and we all know what it was like to get started. And.... nobody is calling you stupid for not knowing about this software.  We might call you stupid if you get drunk and have a hangover and come in whining about that.... but I don't think I've ever see anyone here call someone stupid because they didn't know something about the software.....

Here's the point. You are in your house. We are not there. We are not going to come there and hold your hand. We will help, and even go out of our way to help you. BUT..... for us to help you, we need to see that YOU are trying to help your self.

That said: Locate and read all the info you can on whatever problem you are having. Try to work through it using the help files and the tutorials.  Then, IF you are not able to understand somethign or get it to work properly or find something you know should be there...like  a GM bank...... come in to this forum, start a thread on that topic and tell us as much as you can about what you did to solve the problem, how it''s acting and we will jump in and help with our collective wisdom or lack thereof.  We are subject to be funny, or attempt to be and sometimes that is mistaken as rudeness or worse. That is not our intention to insult you. You can go to any other forum site on the net to get that..... we try to be helpful and friendly here. (There are always exceptions, even here of course)

If you do not understand something we tell you, tell us that you don't understand...do not simply repeat the question, because that makes us think you are not paying attention... THAT will illicit a bad attitude from the person trying to help you.....

    Enough rambling....

one last thing..... at least until you get to the point where you pretty much know 98% of everything you need to know..... go into your profile and in the signature box, list the computer and soundcard and any other gear that is part of the signal chain.... so we don't have to continue to ask what gear you have in each new thread.  You can edit that with new gear, and remove it when you get really comfortable with your DAW.
