Recording audio output from WusikStation in SONAR X1 Producer
Does anyone have the secret recipe for recording audio output from the WusikStation VSTi's Groove Sequencer in SONAR X1 Producer? I've managed to figure out how to do this in Reaper, but I haven't been able to figure out a comparable way to do this in SONAR Producer. I have looked through the soft synths section of the user guide and the reference guide (the 1200+ page manual). Thanks very much for any advice you can offer.

Thanks very much for your reply. I'll put that in as a feature request. Seems kind of bizarre that you can't record the output as audio from the Wusik Station Groove Sequencer. I have a couple of other synths based on Wusik and same issue there. I think this is also an issue with the Groovebox instruments in Native Instruments' Reaktor soft synth when it's run inside a host.

I've never tried this with WS Groove Sequencer, but in Reaktor I have ... Insert it normally (via synth rack) so you have a MIDI and AUDIO track as usual. In the MIDI track put a note at the start and a note at the very end of the project timeline. Then either freeze the synth or bounce to track. This will create an audio only track. You may have to freeze or bounce in 'realtime' (audible bounce).

Thanks very much for your very helpful suggestion Billy. I did work out in SONAR how to record the MIDI directly from the Wusik Station Groove Sequencer, however, it doesn't sound the same. I will try your method and see if it makes a difference.

I am working on some tests with the Aerobic Groovebox Ensemble in Reaktor 5 and will report back.

My tests were unsuccessful with either the Aerobic Groovebox Ensemble or the Massive 1.1 Groovebox Ensemble of Reaktor 5.5. While I was able to trigger the sound, what I want to be able to do is what I can do in Reaper, which is record the audio output of a Reaktor Groovebox directly as audio without having to record it first as MIDI and then freeze the synth to generate the audio. It's easy enough as well in Reaper to record the MIDI output. Here's my basic procedure in SONAR that's left me frustrated as I can hear the sound from the Groovebox but can't record it directly: 1.Insert Reaktor as a soft synth with the Simple Instrument Track and Enable MIDI Output boxes checked in the Insert Soft Synth Options. 2. Set the Input of the Reaktor instrument track to Reaktor itself. 3. Arm the track for recording and enable monitoring (button to the right of the arm track button). 4. Click the record button in the transport. The Groovebox will play and I can hear the sound but nothing gets recorded. I've also had uneven results in even getting the MIDI output recorded from the Reaktor Grooveboxes. I am now satisfied, despite my previous report, with the audio I can generate by freezing the WusikStation soft synth's Groovebox MIDI. Recording the MIDI output from WusikStation and its variants such as Viral Outbreak is a piece of cake compared with Reaktor's Grooveboxes.

Well, I've been successful with Reaktor 5 using the MIDI track just to make sure Sonar sends data to the synth. However, you might try realtime freeze instead of fast freeze. Or just do a realtime bounce to track (soloing just the reaktor or whatever synth). Also - you could always just playback and take the ASIO return (if your audio device has one - most do) as the record track.

Thanks for all your helpful advice. After further testing I've now got my audio recording technique from Reaktor's Grooveboxes down to a T. I went back to the Native Instruments' Forum and found this had all been discussed about two or three years ago and the method that was recommended was one I'd discovered on my own though my initial tests seemed to suggest it was unreliable. I've now been able to record to audio three different Reaktor Grooveboxes (Aerobic, Massive 1.1 and Newscool). Here's the secret receipe: 1. If you don't have an empty audio track, insert an audio track. 2. With the track selected, look at the channel inspector and click the small plus sign to the right of the FX bin. This will bring up a menu from which you can select Reaktor as a SOFT SYNTH (not as an Audio FX!). 3. Select and drag a Groovebox Ensemble into the Reaktor panel. 4. Arm the track for recording and click the Monitor Input button. 5. Click the Record button in the transport control. 6. You should see a solid line after the metronome countoff stops and recording begins. More importantly, you should hear the audio output from the groovebox. 7. Stop the recording when convenient by clicking the Record button or the Stop button. You can now either use the File > Export Audio to save the audio to a suitable format OR you can freeze the synth using the audio track's freeze synth button. If you use the latter, insert a new audio track and drag the waveform/clip into the new audio track. Unfreeze/thaw the synth to return the audio track to its original state. I also subsequently discovered that in the Audio folder associated with my test project that there're WAV files that contains the audio from each of the tracks that I tested the different grooveboxes with. So while it may not be necessary to freeze the synth or export the audio, it's probably a precaution worth taking.

I completely forgot about that technique (ie, inserting in the FX bin as a synth). That's definitely one approach. I've had success with the other approaches as well. So glad you got it sorted out.
