The Smallest Measure

Here's something I started working on Saturday. This is only the beginning section, think "sketch" ;)

The Smallest Measure

Thanks,
Bill

The sound was immediately evocative of something subtle but great that was happening in the soul of a being.  I could imagine a movie where the lead character is at the brink of some "moment" that is life changing.  The smallest measure perhaps, but huge in impact.  Do you have lyrics for this as well in the wings?

Very nice, what there is.  Where is it going?

Nice, I would modulate it before where it currently ends? And bring in the drums and bass. This is like an intro.

    Bill,
Nice stuff.  I would echo the other poster's comments.  Looking forward to hearing this one develop.

It's certainly a good seed.  What have you in mind for its germination?  I sense an electronica-type of song, something along the lines of Endorphin, or some of Moby's stuff.  Arp'd synths, driving bass.  Make sure you keep in the piano though - I love the blend of 'instruments' with electronica songs.

Lyrics ... will there be any?  Not sure if they're warranted here.

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Originally all I had was the piano part and I was contemplating creating a rock ballad from it. I even lined up a singer for it. Then I recorded the piano and thought a solo cello would sound cool for the verse with guitars, bass, and drums coming in on the refrain and for the rest of the song. But after listening to the solo cello I thought I should add a few violins. Sounding good so far but now it's string heavy and needed something to round out the lower end...I know..a few tubas and french horns. By this point I started seeing a picture in my head of where this piece would fit perfectly- a Civil War themed movie!! Ok, it's missing something...I know...banjo! Then a few violas to play against the banjo.

I'll be working on this again this weekend. I'm looking to add some marching snares that will transition into the next section, a simple melody on the piccolo, yadda yadda yadda ;)

I"ll post where I get to this weekend :)

    Thanks for listening,
    Bill

Nice start.   Definitely felt like it was building up to something cool.

    Good start.
The string heavy balance is fine.
I was playing some snare rolls, which seemed to fit what you are setting up, but then it stops.
Run with it. Let's see where it goes.

You sound like you 'build' orchestras sorta like I do....just keep adding things until it's done. :-)  Anyway, I really really like this.  I wondered if you might want to have the transitions (I mean, from note to note) more legato?  If not, and that was on purpose, I'm sure I can live with it though. :-)  Very nice...keep going!

Very slight update...added some percussion and an acoustic guitar track today, tomorrow I'll start the next section. I'll transition by fading everything but the percussion out and let the drums play a bit by themselves before the next part starts.

The link above points to the updated version :)
