digi 002 vs. S 8.5

Hi all...

I'm having some issues with sonar 8.5 crashing with my digi 002r interface.

Here's how it works: I get into Sonar and select a song or bundle that I wanna open. The session loads, however, when I hit the spacebar to play, the screen does not scroll, or advance to show what's happening throughout the song. After about 30 secs, I hear some digital distortion and dropout. It doesn't freeze until I hit a point around 30 secs or so into the session, and I can scroll ahead manually to catch the progress of the waves/ midi.

I have installed the correct ASIO drivers, and my computer - as well as Sonar - can detect the hardware. ASIO playback and recording is set correctly. Checked the ASIO panel under Options>audio, and the clock source is set to internal. I've tried disabling UAC settings, turning off antivirus, disabling background items, screen saver (even wallpaper), selective startup, and set power options to always on... Even enabling/disabling the multiprocessing engine...

Help would be much obliged...
Thanks

BTW: I know that the digi and s8.5 are conflicting, because once the crash occurs, if I switch off my interface, then sonar will instantly "unfreeze", as it were...

It has to be some simple minutiae that I'm overlooking.

EDIT: Ok... lolz. Totally forgot to add a bunch of stuff... sorry. :

I'm using win 7 as my os. I am running a 64bit os, however I have plenty of plug-ins that I like, and they are mostly 32bit, so I kept it simple with the 32bit install of sonar. Perhaps this could be an issue, but I doubt it.

I do have a dedicated HDD for audio (WD cav black 500 for os, and WD cav black 1tb for audio), 24 gigs of ram (gskill ripjaw), evga classy 3 mobo, and an i7 950... I connect via firewire from my 002 to the backpanel of my computer.

Have you tried disabling multi-core CPU support in Sonar?

Is that under options>advanced: use multiprocessing engine? If so, then yes... I have tried that and nada, man.
