Say WHAT!

Yeah.... some time back, last year, I was messing around with a chord progression, and it started sounding like a song from way back in my past. I threw a few tracks down and one day, having lunch with Gregy57, I let him hear it. He looks at me and says, "DUDE! This is cool, the vox needs work." or something like that...... or did he say... "Man delete this mess?"

Well since it's a cover tune I let it set with no real plans to ever finish it.....after all it was just for kicks.

Greg mentioned it a few weeks ago in another post and has not revealed the name of the song....Thanks Greg!

I decided this morning to finish it up and post it on some obscure site on the internet where it's really hard to stumble across by accident.

So....be warned. It comes out full tilt boogie and rips your face off. It takes you though the sordid things that you might not really want to explore and leaves you in a quivering mound of flesh laying on the floor begging for mercy.... or, MORE.

Instrumentation is drums and bass by BB, strings and pad panned 50/50 opposite by me with EWQL and DimLe, guitar is one lead and one maxed out crunchy rhythm,,  and 4 vox tracks...lead vox, hi octave, hi harmony, and trash talkin.

If you don't like it... address all complaints and grievances to Gregy57

If you do like it, you probably need psychiatric help.

Here

Enjoy........You can comment if you want but it is what it is and that's all it will ever be.

Stay away from Marks and Sparks.

    That's a really good version.

Good vocals -  a bit different to hear 'Marks & Sparks' sung in that accent :-) but it works.

Cool, Herb. I'm glad you finished it. It sounds great, too, better than the first time I heard it.
And thanks for misspelling my name; if there are any complaints, they'll go to this fictional 'Gregy57' instead of me.
Did I ever mention I saw them in 1971, opening for Grand Funk at the Frankfurt Messe? That was long before this song, though.

Hey I'm glad everyone's liking this.

I need to burn a copy and send it to a high school buddy who lives in Florida..... no internet.... He used to walk around singing just one line in this song all the time..... "Is that concrete all around or is it in my head?"

This was more fun than I'd care to admit.... and I think the vox turned out way better than I thought they ever would.

Greg.... I too had a chance to see Mott back in the day... I believe they were act #2 out of 3 and Blue Oyster Cult was the headliner on the show.

I like it Herb.  I wish I had the words as a lot of 'em are kinda hard to make out and it sounds like there's a cool story here.

Nevertheless it's a cool, creative tune with a great vibe.

    Peace,

The lyrics are a bit hard to understand even when you hear them clearly.....
it is, after all, a David Bowie song.

    here are the words:

Well Billy rapped all night about his suicide
How he kick it in the head when he was twenty-five
Speed jive don't want to stay alive When you're twenty-five
And Wendy's stealing clothes from Marks and Sparks
And Freddy's got spots from ripping off the stars from his face
    Funky little boat race
Television man is crazy saying we're juvenile delinquent wrecks
Oh man I need TV when I got T Rex Oh brother you guessed I'm a dude

All the young dudes Carry the news Boogaloo dudes Carry the news
All the young dudes Carry the news Boogaloo dudes Carry the news

Lucy looks sweet cause he dresses like a queen
He can kick like a mule it's a real mean scene
But we can love oh yes we can love
And my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones
I never got it off on that revolution stuff
What a drag too many snags
Now I've drunk a lot of wine and I'm feeling fine
Got to race some cat to bed
Oh is there concrete all around
Or is it in my head Yeah I'm a dude

All the young dudes Carry the news Boogaloo dudes Carry the news
All the young dudes Carry the news Boogaloo dudes Carry the news

    Ad lib at the end:

Hey YOU, out there, with the funny looking glasses. Are you a DUDE?
I think you are. you should be proud of that. Carry the news, tell everybody.

BAPU, MOOCH, STRUMMY, I wonder about you guys sometimes. Are you DUDES?
If you are be proud of it.
Owwww. Don't hurt me, don't hurt me man. Owww Carry that news.

hey Herb - really nice stuff here.  I know you already said you aren't changing anything, but I have to mention a couple of things anyway.  I think your vox are way too wet with verb on this.  I would have backed that off to make it match the other instruments a little better - it sounds "out of place"

the bgv's are almost as loud as the lead vox, I'd back them down a little.

    great fun tune, tho!

Hey you with the Glasses, I want you !!!!! ... I wanted to do this for years .....

I always loved Ian Hunter and Mott the Hoople. ( I think I was the only person I knew who were the least bit familiar with their work as a kid ) That particular album really put them in the spotlight thanks to Bowie and Overend's Watts friendship.  FYI Ian rejected Bowie's original offer of Suffragette City, whereby Bowie wrote this tune specifically for Ian.  This album really showcases Verden Allen's incredible chops on the organ.

Nice work Herb. I totally enjoyed what you did with this one and yeah this isn't thick as a brick, now is it?

Beagle, yeah I mixed it intentionally a bit wet.  I was just having fun with this, and since I saw these guys years ago in a huge coliseum, I figured I'd go for the huge room sound.  Especially the BGV.

The vox are all about the same level on the console.  the main vox are the lower ones in pitch in the chorus, I sang it one octave lower to give it stability. I then recorded one octave higher almost falsetto, and also recorded a high harmony.... they are spread 35% opposite and pretty wet to do what I tell others not to do......use FX to hide the flaws..... but it kinda worked. No melodyne was used in the recording or mixing of this tune..... it's all straight out of the mic, and all one take per track.

The ad lib was almost an after thought.... and almost didn't happen. I had to bring the coffee house denizens into it somehow....

    Thanks for listening.

Josh... this was probably before your time.... I think Mott was rockin in the early 70's cause I remember this from HS....

    T6...yeah...agreed.

It was fun to record...I actually started messing with this last year, Greg heard the early version one day when we had lunch. I was not planning to finish it.... but a few weeks ago he mentioned it and I had some spare time and decided.... oh what the heck... It's rough but I enjoyed it. Bowie is such a cool writer.

First off, I love this song. I like the way this is done all the way through. I just wish the bowie vocal was in this. However, this makes yours fresh. the reverb is dead on.
