Beginner: Yamaha Motif-Rack XS / FW16E / Cakewalk Producer X1a - Setup Q’s…

Hi: I’m new to this forum and just getting back into digital music so I will apologize in advance if I am asking any unwise basic questions…

I recently starting to set up the following:

Yamaha Motif-Rack XS w/FW16E and Cakewalk (x64) Sonar X1 Producer (currently X1a build 198) on an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC w/Windows 7 64 bit, Installed memory (RAM) 8.00 GB, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M520 @ 2.40GHz 2.40GHz, System Type: 64-bit Operating System…
All driver installs fine. No errors, but I have not yet been able to successfully experiment with this new gear. I’ve been reading through a lot of posts (motifator forum as well as here, etc.) and researching regarding connecting Yamaha Motif Rack XS via FW16E to Cakewalk Sonar X1 and have not yet been completely successful…

I sometimes see all audio and midi devices (inputs and outputs) displayed but not always. When resident, I have attempted to simply play some midi files employing just GM and often the laptop just locks up freezes, and I have to reboot. I have tested with many settings within preferences based on many posts I have read and the manuals for both Cakewalk and Yamaha.

I am beginning to wonder if these guys don't play well together :-). I had tested w/CuBase installed but really want to go with the above, since I have worked with many versions of Cakewalk SW over the years. CuBase is not currently installed and I had, but now uninstalled - Studio Manager too. I want all 64 bit if possible.

The Firmware for the Steinberg FW Driver's IEEE1394 is V1.08. I have purchased the X1 instruction video as well, to get myself back up to speed with the basics, but need to have a solid setup configuration first obviously. Anyone have any words of wisdom with the above setup, suggested preference settings, perhaps not use FW and just USB instead which will not have as many options but perhaps will suffice with what I need it for, etc. Advice/suggestions welcome?

Well, i dont have x1, but I have an S70xs and have no problems at all with producer 8.5.3.

So, i would certainly simply start with the xs rack connected as midi/USB and start from there.. get your ins files sorted out and get to be happy if only for an hour :)...

Then, once you get the midi stable then gulp and start on the fw16e.. again midi first then onto the audio.

    good luck
