Session Drummer 3 What settings do you use?
Hey: Wondering what others prefer for settings on SD 3 - for a nice acoustic / "tight" sound - this would be to accompany an acousic guitar based song - about 120 tempo. Settings in terms of some of the tunings on the kit itself, and then channel fx, etc. At this point in the beginning of the song, my pattern is pretty simple - kick, snare, and ride. I am just not getting it to sound the way I think it should be..... thanks (have each part of the kit on its own channel)

Try the MoTown kit and PX64 Drum Strip - adjust to taste.

Place one instance on each drum track you want to effect. I think MoTown starts out pretty 'tight' but with the strip you can dial in/out as much tightness as you want with the transient shaper. Also check out the Master Drum Classes. Awesome learning tool. http://cakewalk.com/CakeT.SONARU.aspx/Master-Class

i just figured out tonight how to synch a sr 16 drum machine to session drummer 3.and follow the click..its so easy to make my patterns in my own drum machine..hook it up press play and have the whole drum parts play out in synch with x1 tempo..this is a break through for me..sorry to get off target here..but you might want to check out the videos in sonar university(cake tv)seth goes through it pretty nice..maybe not exactly what your asking about but it may inspire you to do other things as well

Yes Charlie, but it's SO much easier to create your patterns in Sonar's prv than relying on the SR16 interface. I know, I've got one!

When I was using SD, I would create 1 bar manually, then drag it out for as many measures as I wanted, then edit each in turn so that they sounded slightly different to each other, same for fills etc. Nowadays, I use BFD2 and rather than create every hit manually, I usually start off with one of their pre-rolled "Grooves", then edit to taste. But - you can do the same thing in Sonar, just get it to loop around 1 bar/measure, set to record and add notes on the fly, I can't see how it's any different to using the SR16, plus of course, you can easily zoom in on misplaced hits and position them exactly where you want. S ame for velocity. The SR16 only provides I think, 10 velocity levels? In Sonar you get the full complement of 127. And then of course there's mapping - the way I do it, every single kit piece comes up on its own track in Sonar, so I can compress & EQ my kick, snare, hat, toms etc totally differently to each other. Or have you managed to incorporate this functionality into your workflow? HTH!!

I am not at my computer to look - is MoTown one of the kits with SD3 or do we have to find and download it?

Charlie, I can't speak for Ezdrummer - I'm sure many users are completely satisfied with it, but BFD certainly blows Session Drummer into next week. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun08/articles/fxpansionbfd2.htm And of course, since the time of the SOS review, they've released many expansion packs which augment the basic package really well.

Bristol is right BFD is a great program I had to decided between that and Superior Drummer 2 by toontrack I ended up with Superior Drummer with all the addons fantastic program ! If I had the Cash I would have BFD aswell and I plan on geting it when I can afford to. You can get a free trial of BFD and theres also a free trial of EZ Drummer ( a scaled down version of Superior Drummer) There well worth downloading and trying Norrie

Charles if you think you'll use Session Drummer then take the time to view the videos in the Master Class. It shows a lot of tricks and tips. Most people agree that the 3rd party drums like Superior and BFD are are eh... superior, but I don't need them myself for my limited uses. I have EZ Drummer as well and I like Session Drummer a little better because of the additional kits that cost extra with EZ. I do use both Session Drummer and EZ however.

+1 Larry. I have used Session Drummer for years and it works just fine when you tweak it on multiple channels. If you can master that first, you may not need to go out and purchase other programs. However, last year, I bought BFD Eco on sale for $39. That was a steel and I do like the program. Rimshot
